I buy most of my books from charity shops and novels are usually £1. Oxfam's are £2.49. Why do they charge so much and does anyone buy them?

People must buy them, or the shops would surely close. I agree that Oxfam's on the expensive side though.

I've seen second hand copies of penguin popular classic books for a pound more than the cost of a brand new one in Oxfam before.

And the price in the Oxfam bookshops varies from place to place. They're more expensive in better off town / city centres IME.

Oxfam has always been expensive, your better off signing up to freebie websites in your area and putting on wanted webiste for books, or alternatively get yourself with local library :)

Do you get freebie websites for books?

Nospringflower · 18/06/2012 23:29

I buy them as they are still cheaper than buying new and you know the money is going to a good cause Smile

Our local BHF charity shop charges about £2.50 for second-hand books. I buy in there occasionally, but the price can be offputting. There are other charity shops selling books for less, and I don't mind which charity I support :)

I think Oxfam Books charge more because they have sorted them - you can find books you want.

The price is similar to Amazon marketplace sellers

Charity shops that just have a box or shelf of random books charge less, buy you have to shop around/get lucky.

I guess Oxfam knows what they are doing - their aim is to raise maximum money

I love Oxfam bookshops - all the books are properly sorted just like a proper bookshop. This means they can charge higher prices which benefits the charity more. It's the only place I donate books to and the main place I buy books too as I'm so much more likely to find something I like.

oxfam also only keep books in really good condition unlike other charity shops. but i agree, its expensive. i go in there instead of buying firsthand for presents but not for every day.

Pretty sure there was an article about them i read... That they are putting independents out of business? Will have a dig & see if I can find it. Oxfam in general is expensive - £20 for a second hand M&S cotton dress the other day.

Oxfam are expensive but they are more likely to have that recently published book than some of the other charity shops. I think there is a chance with times being more difficult that they will price themselves out of the market. The clothes are far far too expensive I think. £20 for a second hand M & S cotton dress. Shock

I pay £2.50 or even more occasionally for charity shop books I really want - it's not just Oxfam who charge high prices, and many charities vary prices in the shops according to location and local policy. On Saturday I paid £3 for a book I really wanted from an Oxfam in Oxford - it is a very good condition trade paperback, cover price £12.50, current Kindle price £6.17.

I have one local to me charity shop which is cheaper and has reasonable stock though it's not as well organised as the books in most Oxfam shops.

I have too many books and am trying to buy Kindle rather than charity shop books anyway, ok, I'm very ill-disciplined and get too many of both, but I'm fussy about condition for most books.
