I need a few new authors to get into. I just finished Val McDermid's latest, am reading a Nicci French one at the moment. Read all of Patricia Cornwell and Kathy whatsername. Anyone got any suggestions for me to branch out on?

What kind of thing are you looking for, Bouj? Crime novels?

If so have you tried Minette Walters Or Ruth Rendell?

Personally I like Dick Francis a lot, in the crime genre I think he's the best. Great plots and written really well.

Reginald Hill (Dalziel and Pascoe books)
P.D.James (Dalgliesh series)
Tony Hillerman (Leaphorn/Chee series - set amongst Native Americans in Arizona).
Barbara Nadel (Ikmen series set in Istanbul)
Ian Rankin (Rebus series).
Robert Wilson (Small Death in Lisbon)

If you like pathologist lit, you might like Karin Slaughter (read about 3/4 of Kisscut and gave up because I thought it was unremittingly unpleasant, but you might have a stronger stomach than me!!)

Really like (of the crime/thriller genre)

Linda Fairstein (NY prosecuter)
Quintine Jardine (Oz Blackstone series which is v tongue in cheek and other one with Edinburgh detective)
Lisa Gardner (only read one but it was v good - The Third Victim)
PJ Tr(e)acey ones are great (only two of them so far)
Lindsey Davies (set in ancient Rome)
David Wishart (also set in Rome but quite different inc some novels based on historical fact e.g. Sejanus, Ovid, Virgil etc)
Harlan Coben (tongue in cheek series about Myron Bolitar and stand alone thrillers)
Richard North Patterson (thrillers set around interesting legal issues in USA e.g. abortion, gun control, death penalty)
Christopher Brookmyer (black comedy)
Lilian Jackson Braun (The Cat Who...series - very random but weirdly seductive)
Sara Paretsky (VI Warshawski, set in Chicago)
Elizabeth Peters (Amelia Peabody - Egyptologist at turn of 20th century - funny)

Probably enough for now. It's turning into a memory test...

Also Ruth Rendell (Chief Inspector Wexford) and Peter Robinson (DI Banks)

HTH

I can do other genres too (honest)

If you like crime novels, Peter Robinson takes some beating in my opinion - his Inspector Banks series is good, and he has written a couple of pyschological thrillers as well. I also like Peter Lovesey and Sue Grafton.

mummytosteven · 24/02/2006 11:52

oh yes, Peter Robinson is very very good, a bit less bleak than Rebus.

Steven Saylor also has a good Private Eye series set in Rome (the Roma Sub Rosa series) starting Gordianus the Finder.

Excellent - thanks. Some great ideas here, and lots I have seen about, so I can get my hands on! Absolutely love reading, and do love it when you stumble across a great new author. Now, how many can I 'sample' in the next 9 weeks before baby comes and life goes pearshaped again!?!
