At what point do you give up on a book you're not enjoying?

Or do you just persevere?

Bored rigid by the one I'm reading - and Kindle says I'm only 61% there. Don't really want to give up past halfway but it's very slow...

I also never used to.but recently concluded that my time is too precious to waste reading something I wasn't enjoying! Especially when I have a list of books waiting to read!

I used to feel really bad and plough through.

Not anymore. If I am bored I put the book down.

I try to cover about 100 pages before giving up. Some books take that long to get going, and if I'm not even a little hooked by that stage I give up. The exceptions to this are that if it is one of my Book Group titles then I stagger on to the bitter end, or if it is quite an lightweight book (eg TT's Wife) I might skim to the finish.

I did finish Cloud Atlas eventually and regard that as a fine achievement! Bits of it were so good but there was a section in the middle that was almost incomprehensible.

Novels I have abandoned include Wide Sargasso Sea, Captain Corelli, The Hobbit, Enderby, and plenty more but I don't remember the titles.

I give a book 100 pages, but its rare for me to give in.

TBH, I never finished the book I had to do for A level English - it was Vanity Fair by Thackeray. THE most boring book on this planet. Thank Goodness for the Letts Revision Guides.

Its put me off reading any more serious classics. But at least I still read a lot.

Sometimes it's worth persevering but if you are still not gripped by say 1/3 of the way through then it's not looking good.

*ThisAintKansas" I threw "The Time Travellers Wife" away after about two chapters....utter tosh! ...unusual for me, I usually persevere for a while but I could see that it was pure nonsense!

Sandstorm The Da Vinci Code has come in for a lot of stick over the years but whatever its literary merits, it is a brilliant page turner and so easy to read. Perhaps you just weren't interested in the subject matter?

I also find that sometimes it depends on your mood. I've gone back to books I gave up on and enjoyed them 2nd time around.
