I have just finished The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Husseini and thought they were both amazing books that I will remember for a long time.

If they weren't award winners with amazing reviews there is no way I would have picked them up in a library or bookshop as I wouldn't have thought they were my cup of tea and would be far too "heavy" for me (but I am definitely not into light chicklit books)

Also recently read Before I go to Sleep, One Day and Birdsong.

I usually go for thrillers - Harlen Coben, Karin Slaughter, that sort of thing.

Also recently read The Suspicions of Mr Whicher which was a Richard and Judy recommended read - I found this very hard going and skipped a lot of it.

Can anyone recommend any really good reads that are hard to put down?

Life of Pi.
I loathed it, but then I loathed the Husseini books & Birdsong, so maybe you'd enjoy??

Not a thriller but, as you say you liked One Day, you might also like The Marriage Plot by Jeffrey Eugenides. It is similar in that it starts with University and examines the relationships between the characters Leonard, Madeleine and Mitchell. I enjoyed it much more than I did One Day.

Also, I would recommend Rules of Civility by Amor Towles, Me Before You by Jojo Moyes, The Secret History by Donna Tartt, My Dear I Wanted To Tell You by Louisa Young.

Also, non fiction - How To Be a Woman by Caitlin Moran - I enjoyed it but not everyone would :)

I think I tried The Secret History by Donna Tartt a few years back but for some reason gave up after one chapter. Sometimes I think I need to be on holiday to get into a book with absolutely no distractions.

Just thought of another good one I read earlier this year - We need to talk about Kevin.

As you like thrillers give John Connolly a whirl. He's really rather good.

A 'heavyweight' book I'd never have chosen was East Of Eden by John Steinbeck. An ex bought it for me, and it's one of the best books I've ever read.

Try A Disobedient Girl by Ru Freeman. A bit like A Thousand Splendid Suns, but better. Set in Sri Lanka, it tells the story of two girls brought up in the same household; one a servant and the other the spoiled daughter. They are very close as children but their lives inevitably take different paths.

I think you would also really enjoy The Help.

If you like thrillers, have you tried the Nicci French books? There's loads of them, immensely unputdownable ime. I've read them all!

If you enjoyed Before I Go To Sleep, and you like thrillers, you might like Rosamond Lupton's two books, Sister and Afterwards.
