Diary of Anne Frank - suitable for a 10 year old?

Dd (10) has recently become fascinated by Anne Frank. I read it many years ago but can't remember if it would be suitable for her or not.
I have found a shorter version for children on kindle, but I'm not sure which to go for.

Yes it's fine IMO it was written by a child. I would suggest you read it yourself though so you can answer any questions your dd may have about the subject matter.

Magneto · 22/05/2012 16:54

Because it could be upsetting.

(sorry posted too soon before)

I was around that age when I read it, I think it's fine for a child that age to read especially as she obviously already knows the basics to have an interest in her.

snozzlemaid · 22/05/2012 17:14

Thanks. I think it's the sort of book she would enjoy reading. She really empathises with children of her age going through harrowing experiences.
I just wasn't sure how graphic it was - I was forgetting that of course it was written by a child Blush

For a more modern take on living through a war (Bosnia), your DD might enjoy Zlata's Diary by Zlata Filipovic. I think she was a little older than Anne Frank, and did survive, but it still makes for a harrowing read.

snozzlemaid · 22/05/2012 19:29

Ooh thanks Nora. I'll look into that one too.

I read Anne Frank's diary at around that age. I was quite fascinated by her for a while.

DoodleAlley · 22/05/2012 19:40

I read it at that age too.

MrsApplepants · 22/05/2012 19:48

Yes, but read it yourself first to refresh your memory in case she has any questions. I wouldn't bother with a shortened version of the book.

I agree with other posters. In some primary schools The Diary of Anne Frank is looked at in Literacy in year 6 :)

Fridaysmum · 22/05/2012 19:53

I think there are two versions available - with one more suited to children as it has some editing of her feelings about growing up. My DD has read it in year 6 and loved the story.

xTonixxx · 22/05/2012 21:11

Don't quote me on it but I think the alternative edition tends to be called "Anne Frank - The Diary of a Young girl". Whsmiths do educational editions

DD read it when she was 10 and a few months later we visited the house in Amsterdam (it wasn't as small as either of us had imagined).

DD also read The Boy in the Striped Pajamas around the same time.

mummmsy · 22/05/2012 21:14

yes read it at that age and have recently re-read it as an adult. i'd be happy for my 10 yo dd to read it too Smile

snozzlemaid · 23/05/2012 07:59

Thanks all. A resounding yes then. I'll get her a copy and I think I'd love to re-read it too.
I've visited the house too Beanbagz, though many years ago.
