Morning. Was talking to a friend about books we loved yesterday and she talked about this one. I'm desperate to get 'going' again with a good book (been so busy with the children recently, I have not read much).

I've just been on amazon and it seems that there are a few books with this title by different authors. It was a real tear jerker, based on a true story I think. Any ideas. Many thanks.

It's Jodi Picoult.

Imnotaslimjim · 04/05/2012 09:58

Yep, Jodi Picoult. Be warned though, you need a comfy sofa and a box of tissues. And an alarm clock if you have plans, because once you're reading you can't put it down.

I'm on my 8th Jodi Picoult, she's very good

Four4me · 04/05/2012 10:01

Wow thanks. I'm ridiculously excited about diving into a good read, it has been too long. I'm not great at putting one down when I get going....... My poor dh and dc's Grin about to do online shopping, better add baked beans for them and tissues Wink .

It was`a Richard and Judy bookclub choice a few years ago. I read it then. V. sad story - definitely a tear-jerker :(

MrsHelsBels74 · 04/05/2012 20:35

I loved this book until the ending, then I got so angry I threw the book across the room! Sorry to disagree with what appears to be the majority who love this book.

MadameChinLegs · 04/05/2012 20:37

If you like My Sister's Keeper, OP, then I'd recommend a few more of Jodi Picoult's books.... The Pact, Keeping the Faith, Plain Truth are all similar and good reads.

MrsHelsBels75 - You and me both...

PorkyandBess · 04/05/2012 20:41

This book was the biggest pile of badly written shite that I have ever had the misfortune to read.

One of the mums at school told me I would love it.

Having read it, I am quite insulted.

MadameChinLegs · 04/05/2012 20:43

Grin maybe it's a marmite book.

KateShmate · 04/05/2012 20:45

Have any of you seen the film?
I read the book first (loved it!) and then watched the film - can't decide which is better.. the film is more believable to be honest, but I love how obsessed I was with the book.

MadameChinLegs · 04/05/2012 20:46

Well, I liked the film, and initially disagreed with them casting Cameron Diaz as the mum, BUT think she did it really well and I stand corrected.

I didn't like that they changed the ending.

I am someone who will always prefer the book though.

KateShmate · 04/05/2012 21:22

ChinLegs Do you think that the film ending was more realistic?
I didn't realize they'd changed the ending, so when watched them film I couldnt believe it.

I normally do prefer the book - but can't decide with this, book or film?!

sundew · 04/05/2012 21:25

I loved this book until the end which I HATED - I was really disappointed. I wouldn't recommend this book at all!! which is odd for me as I enjoy most books.

NoraHelmer · 04/05/2012 21:31

The ending was awful. How does the film end?

KateShmate · 04/05/2012 21:49

In the film the ending is Kate dying.
It sounds a bit harsh saying that its more realistic - but the ending of the book is a tad ridiculous.
The ending, in the most horrible way, is actually nice - its not a horrendous death or anything.

Tillyscoutsmum · 04/05/2012 21:57

I preferred the ending in the book. It shocked me. Hated the fact they changed it in the film

Four4me · 05/05/2012 08:40

Well some mixed opinions. Will have to get on and buy it and see for myself. Thanks for the other titles Madame

Happy bank holiday weekend Ladies Smile

I don't really know, I suppose the film was more 'realistic' but I didn't feel the book ending was 'unrealistic'....it was a shock. I like a twist, and, love her or ate her Jodi Picoult does brilliant twists.

MrsHelsBels74 · 05/05/2012 19:09

I felt like the ending was a cop out....she couldn't be bothered to finish it as it should have been so just threw that in. I felt cheated.

valiumredhead · 08/05/2012 18:52

I'm with porky on this one! I would never speak to anyone again if they thought I'd like this Grin I have given Ms Picoult a fair go and refuse to read anymore of her badly written shite books again.

OP I would suggest Me before You by Jojo Moyles - now THAT you will need a big pile of tissues for!

BlingLoving · 11/05/2012 17:05

In my book club, I was the only one who hated this book. I am so glad there are others who found the ending actually made them angry. It's not a book that's supposed to have a twist ending. It was shite and I get angry thinking about it even now.

Thetokengirl · 11/05/2012 17:10

I hated this book with an absolute vengence.
When we discussed it in our book club, I am afraid that I put everyone else off it too Blush.
I must confess, that as a doctor, I struggle with books that have medicine in them, but this book was so very, very bad and factually inaccurate that I got really angry.

It is not based on a true story as nothing like this would be allowed to happen.

Thetokengirl · 11/05/2012 17:11

again, not gagain!

PaintedToenails · 11/05/2012 20:37

I am with the I Hated This Book With A Vengeance. Emotionally manipulative, badly researched twaddle. I couldn't get behind any of the characters for some reason. I've not read any more of Picoult's books so it could be her fault or I might just have a black soul......
