I fancy giving one a go as not read any of his since i was a teenager. I read Carrie, The Shining, and some other one which i seem to remember was about a girl walking through the woods imagining herself at a baseball game? can't really remember that one!

anyway, recommendations please...

I loved The Green Mile, not his usual kind of story but soooo good (get tissues at the ready tho its a weepy!!)

oldsilver · 28/04/2012 22:55

The Talisman
The Stand - bought it 4.30 on a Saturday afternoon and stayed up all night til I finished on Sunday Morning ... I was single, young and well over 20 years ago Grin

And I still get to thank my best mates for buying me Misery when I was in hospital Grin It so kept me going to get out of there Wink

And for some reason Thinner scared the bejesus out of me Hmm

foosty · 28/04/2012 22:58

Gerald's Game - haunts me

The Shining - classic

Misery - brilliant

have read everything he's done except the Dark Tower series - have tried but just cannot get on with it at all, which disappoints me so much as he is my all time favourite author and the thought of his words being out there and I don't like them....it's upsetting!

also loved The Dark Half, Rose Madder, Firestarter, Christine...

yeah, MNhubbie - you've actually just nailed why I love his books so much - it's the instant connection with the protagonist that draws me in and hooks me, every time.

currently getting through Under the Dome, loving it (but the hardback is so awkward to read in bed!!) ... not long finished 11.22.63 which I really liked

have NOT enjoyed - Cell, Lisey's Story - just those two. Just couldn't connect I suppose.

His collections of short stories have usually been fantastic, as others said - loved The Long Walk especially

good grief, I could ramble on all night about SK. Have introduced my 14 year niece to them, she's working her way through my bookcase shelves...Grin

BulletProofMum · 28/04/2012 22:58

Another vote for the long walk, the stand and the dark tower series.

I've not read any of his more recent stuff

I loved wizard and glass, just the way he wrote about the decline of the old ways, how Gilead was desperately clinging on as the world moved on around it.

I bought the new one yesterday, but am wondering whether to read the others again first... Could I wait that long?

bringbacksideburns · 28/04/2012 23:13

I really enjoyed his latest.

Took a while to get into The Dome - second half is far better.
I had a break from King for a while as i thought he was going downhill a bit. I didn't enjoy The Dark Half, Rose Madder era.

I'm going to save one to take away with me on hols in June. I like his short stories so might take Full dark, no stars. Is that any good?

I absolutely loved his stories Children of the Corn and You know they got one hell of a Band.
I like all that trapped in a small town gubbins.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 29/04/2012 11:26

Full Dark, No Stars = rape one really good (but really horrible), serial killer husband one pretty good (also horrible!) and the other two less good - one was the farmer one which for some reason I felt like I'd read before when I read it (has he visited this idea in a short story maybe?) and I've forgotten the other one.

Short stories - Word Processor Of The Gods is one of my favourites though obviously the technology has dated it a bit now.

The Langoliers is a novella and is really, really good. Completely freaked me out on first reading.

The Mist - love the idea of the beginning of possibly the end being played out in a supermarket!

The Library Policeman (it might not be called that) - that one freaked me out on first reading too (I use the library A LOT!). :)

This is quite interesting all King's books ranked

AfricanExport · 29/04/2012 16:14

The Stand - read it in one go - watched the entire mini-series in one night as well.

The Green Mile
The Dark tower Series

saying that most of his books bore me to death. From a Buick 8 was the worst book I have ever ever read in my life - pulling out teeth painful. Generally his book are just too slow and you are on 3/4 of the way through before anything happens... IF anything happens.

thenightsky · 29/04/2012 21:16

Respect to those who got through The Stand in one go Shock

AfricanExport · 29/04/2012 21:27

Well it took 2 days but I was young and needed less sleep....

bananasarebeautiful · 29/04/2012 22:57

Oooh, I forgot about The Langoliers-that was fantastic!

Ceasnake · 16/05/2012 12:48

I remember reading The Langoliers and when a central character is stabbed, I actually turned back the page and re-read it again, unable to believe that he?d done that. As if re-reading it was going to alter the story in some way. I can?t think of many other writers who make you care quite so desperately about the characters he creates ? and then the bastard goes and kills them off!

Similarly, in The Langoliers again, I ended up feeling desperately sorry for the character who?d actually done the stabbing.

Favs: Salem?s Lot, Misery, pretty much any of the short stories (Survivor Type is possibly one of the most disturbing shorts I?ve ever read), Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption, The Stand (first half, anyway).

BeeInMyBonnet · 16/05/2012 12:57

I think Bag of Bones is one of my favourites. Hard to pick just one though.

Hasn't he written a lot?! Amazing when you think about it.

BeeInMyBonnet · 16/05/2012 13:00

Shock At reading the Stand in one go. I could never do that, I think I must be a slow reader. I had to give up on a book club because I couldn't keep up with the galloping pace they were reading at.

mummynoseynora · 16/05/2012 13:05

I have just scanned this thread but has no one recommended Duma Key yet?! proper back to his creepy best that one, scared the living shit out of me both times I read it (a year apart I think) !

dark tower series is ace

ohhh god most of them are amazing, but not all!
