World book Night 2012 - how many of the 25 books have you read?

Posey · 23/04/2012 13:49

And how many more of them do you fancy?
The list is here www.worldbooknight.org/about-world-book-night/wbn-2012/the-books
I've only read 3 off the list Blush and would be interested in about 8 more.
I certainly had read more off the 2011 list.

Agree the list is less inspiring this year. I guess last year was full of people's all time favourites as it was the first year.

I have read 8 of the books. I loved Notes from a Small Island, The Book Thief and Room. Hated The Remains of the Day and The Time Travellers Wife. The others were Tale of Two Cities, Rebecca and The Road.

NoraHelmer · 23/04/2012 16:21

I've read 6 of them - Pride & Prejudice, Notes from a Small Island, A Tale of Two Cities, Rebecca, The Remains of the Day and I Capture the Castle. I tried to read The Time Traveller's Wife but couldn't get on with it, so that's only part read.

On my TBR pile, I have The Book Thief and Room, and I quite like the sound of The Secret Dreamworld of a Shopaholic.

Quite a nice list I think :)

campergirls · 23/04/2012 16:33

NoraHelmer, if you liked those, then I would really recommend How I Live Now - an incredibly powerful book, and beautifully written.

Empusa · 23/04/2012 16:36

I've read 5 of them (Room, Misery, Time Travellers Wife, Good Omens, and the Book Thief), I'd read all 5 of them again quite happily!

hackmum · 23/04/2012 16:36

I've also read eight. What's the logic behind the list? There are some on there I wouldn't touch with a barge pole.

(The eight are Notes from a Small Island, The Book Thief, The Remains of the Day, I Capture the Castle, Rebecca, Small Island, Pride and Prejudice and A Tale of Two Cities.)

Funnily enough, I was trying to persuade my DP just yesterday that Touching the Void was really famous, but he'd never heard of it.

ripsishere · 23/04/2012 16:45

I've read eleven of them. Blush one was Martina you slag Cole. In my defence I was abroad and English language books were hard to come by.

CoteDAzur · 23/04/2012 16:49

What is this list? It is certainly not a list of books so great that you should definitely read them.

Ian M Banks' "Player of Games" was just OK - one of the weaker sci-fi books I've read. And The Book Thief is superficial and childish written for teenagers. Stephen King's Misery is not a great book by any definition of the word, and is in fact one of his weakest.

mimbleandlittlemy · 23/04/2012 16:52

I've read 11 of them this year - I Capture the Castle, Room, The Book Thief, Harlequin, The Remains of the Day, Rebecca, Small Island, Pride & Prejudice, Time Traveller's Wife, The Vanishing Act of Esme Lennox, Notes from a Small Island.

Had this problem last year too - couple of people trying to give away their allocated books in the playground and I'd already done them. Don't much fancy the others as I feel I know the stories too well in the case of The Tale of Two Cities/Damned United or just don't fancy - Martina Cole, Sophie Kinsella.

MaryAnnSingleton · 23/04/2012 16:53

I bloody hated The Alchemist- had to read it at book group - crap

Posey · 23/04/2012 16:53

I'm not sure how they compile the list or who does it. It is a very varied list (good) but I'm not sure they are the best of each author's really.

Last year I gave away Toast.

SecretSquirrels · 23/04/2012 16:58

I loved the Time Traveller's Wife and hated Room. Read a couple of the others but none I would be grateful to receive.

CoteDAzur · 23/04/2012 16:59

I agree re The Alchemist. Wishy washy philosophy-lite about how life will work out in the end Hmm I couldn't bear it 20 years ago and can't imagine why it would be on any must-read list today.

WowOoo · 23/04/2012 17:01

I've read four, but attempted about seven of them. Also, seen the film of one.

VivaLeBeaver · 23/04/2012 17:04

I've read 15 of them. I'd recommend Touching The Void, you don't need to be keen on climbing to enjoy it. Joe Simpson writes very well.

juneau · 23/04/2012 17:10

I've read 8 of them:

Notes from a Small Island, The Alchemist, Room, Rebecca, How I Live Now, Touching The Void, I Capture the Castle, and The Book Thief.

All good books IMO, although 'How I live Now' is a bit of a teen book and I didn't enjoy it that much. I Capture the Castle is one of my all-time favourites.

ladydepp · 23/04/2012 23:14

I've read 8, possibly 9. Really good ones for me were the Book Thief, I capture the Castle and Touching the Void.

Obviously fantastic - Pride and Prejudice and Rebecca

Just ok- Room, Notes from a Small Island and vanishing Act

I would like to read The Road and The Time Travellers Wife, the others don't really appeal.

PomBearWithAnOFRS · 23/04/2012 23:41

I've read four, and can pretend to have read another four (have either read bits, or skimmed, or seen a film etc)

FallenCaryatid · 23/04/2012 23:45

A dozen of this year's, and a dozen of last year's list.
There's three or four that are on my mental 'To read' shelf.

juneybean · 24/04/2012 00:56

I've only read three but a few more were on my to read list Grin

Finocchio · 24/04/2012 16:49

I've read 13 of them. Mostly I've really enjoyed them.

Of the others, I have no intention of reading Stephen King, or anything with shopaholic in the title. I've been avoiding the Road and Room because they sound a bit too grim.

freelancescientist · 24/04/2012 18:09

I've read 14 and heartily second the recommendation for 'Touching the Void'. Oh and 'The Book Thief' was a smasher as well.

minsmum · 24/04/2012 21:55

I have read and would like to read another 3

minsmum · 24/04/2012 21:55

that should be 9

shrinkingnora · 24/04/2012 22:11

I've read 17 of them. Of those 17 most were really good.
