It's my uncle's birthday soon and I'd like to get him a couple of books but am totally stuck as he seemingly likes 'allsorts' of novels!

Any suggestions?

Thanks
Pie :)

Sharpe?
Classics he might have enjoyed when he was young, and like reading again - Arthur Ransome maybe, or RLS? Biggles, Just William, PG Wodehouse?
Or something more modern that it might not have occurred to him to read - Neil Gaiman's American Gods maybe (although it has some "bad language") or Pratchett's Discworld might amuse him.

How about some books with some personal relevance? When my friend's lovely dad was 80, I gave him a series of crime novels by Stephen Booth set in Derbyshire (he'd been a policeman there) and he was really pleased.

So if your uncle did national service, loved visiting a certain country, or lived in a particular area, or followed a certain career, maybe a couple of novels which would strike a chord with his life?

Give us some clues and maybe we can help you out :)

He's my DP's Uncle and I know he was an English teacher throughout his career (in Surrey), likes golf and most other sports, and lives in the Alps for 6 months of every year now that he's retired.

Thank You!

How about Robert Goddard. I've read quite a few of his. Hard to say what category they fall into but adventure/mystery. They are real page turners. And there's also the Steig Larson books. But he may well have read them. You could always give him a book token. And that would solve the problem of giving him something he might not enjoy.

I've just read 'This Thing of Darkness' by Harry Thompson for my Book Club, and I really enjoyed it - it's the story of Robert Fitzroy - captain of the Beagle and deals with his relationship with Darwin, naval adventure, exploration, discussion of the major ideas of the day. I thought it was a brilliant novel, and most of the people in my club did too. I've just bought a copy to send to my 87yr old aunt Smile
