Need new pulp fiction - read The Hunger Games, Twilight etc

I need something gripping as I finished The Hunger Games last night. Have read the classics to death and am rather enjoying the guilty pleasure of page turning, can't put down tween fiction. Any suggestions?

I've been desperately trying to get more people to read Michael Grant's Gone series (completely aimed at mid-teens so I suspect that's why no one wants to read them) but they're very much dystopian, see if you can get an excerpt on Amazon.

There's also Lauren DeStefano's Wither and Fever which I enjoyed.

Sharpkat · 22/04/2012 20:21

The Patrick Ness trilogy? I am currently reading it as I need to write an essay about it but have really enjoyed it.

PomBearWithAnOFRS · 22/04/2012 21:48

Tomorrow When the War Began is a nice long series - I think you would probably enjoy it if you like Hunger Games. Or Divergent - the second one, Insurgent, is out on May 1st.
Robert Swindells writes a lot of good stuff, although some of them are for younger children rather than teens. Brother in the Land is a good one of his. Z for Zachariah is good, it's by Robert C. O'Brien.
John Christopher has some really good dystopian books, and John Wyndham, although his are a bit dated now.

somewhereinsummertime · 22/04/2012 22:12

Thanks, I will have a look at all these Grin.

Any more suggestions? Not too tween though LOL.

I quite liked Gone, but not enough to be bothered to read then next one.

Noughts and Crosses by Malorie Blackman? The Host (same author as Twilight but quite different). I also love(d) Jonh Wyndam stuff - Midwich Cuckoos and Day of the Triffids are best.

Z for Zachariah had me scared witless about nuclear war when I was much younger!

fruitpastille · 22/04/2012 22:21

Next time will preview for spellings!

Another idea: Mortal Engines (and following books) by Phillip Reeves. London is a city on wheels hunting down other cities and gobbling them up in it's jaws... It's not as dark as it sounds.

juneybean · 22/04/2012 22:25

This is probably a stupid question but is Phillip Reeves anything to do with Cassandra Clare (Mortal Instruments and such like) or are they just similarly named?

PomBearWithAnOFRS · 23/04/2012 23:43

They're just similarly named - I prefer CC to PR if I'm honest, I read all of hers and gave up on PR, they were a tad too "childish" - I read them all as an adult though, and did enjoy them, but the PR ones were just a bit too "young" I think.

juneybean · 24/04/2012 00:49

I've only read one of CC, but noticed PR in the library and got terribly confused!

I was thinking about this thread earlier and wondered what you thought of Gossip Girl?

MarySA · 24/04/2012 08:50

I was browsing round Amazon and this came up. Deborah Harkness A discovery of Witches. I think there are three in the series so far. It said Harry Potter for grown ups. So I ordered it. I've only read a couple of chapters and it's really quite good. There are mixed reviews. Great literature it isn't. An easy different and quite entertaining read it is.

somewhereinsummertime · 24/04/2012 12:28

Let me know mary what you think.

I am not really into sci-fi per se but I spent last night Amazoning all the suggestions and reading samples to see if anything hooked me.

Cassandra Clare's series are very readable and addictive! About Shadowhunters (and is quite Buffyish) I also really like Lauren Kate's series.

AlexanderSkarsgardIWould · 01/05/2012 22:07

The Giver by Lois Lowry. Robert C. O'Brien also did a series of books about the rats of NIMH which I liked (Z for Zachariah is good but kinda depressing). Daz 4 Zoe by Robert Swindells has a stupid title but is very good. If you liked Twilight you might also like the Sookie Stackhouse books - they're not as well written as that (or any of the other books I've suggested so far) and they are adult books but they're page turners. And when I was younger I enjoyed a quartet of books about an alchemist, the writer I think was called William Corlett and the first one was called The Steps Up The Chimney.

Gincognito · 02/05/2012 20:13

A discovery of witches is CRAP. Really disappointing. Vampires who do yoga? Vom.

The Knife of Never Letting Go, on the other hand, is a fucking masterpiece. Tense, thrilling, utterly heart-breaking. I wept openly (on the train Blush) at one point. And it has one of the best dogs ever written.

madamehooch · 13/05/2012 15:44

The 'Stonewylde' series by Kit Berry. Utterly additive and not too 'tweeny.'

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 13/05/2012 19:43

Yes to the 'Gone' series (though I've only read the first one so far).

Yes, yes, yes to The Knife Of Never Letting Go series (Chaos Walking). And yes to 'best dog' award!

Yes to the Mortal Engines series.

Lian Hearn's 'Tales Of The Otori' series is fantastic and a bit different to the bulk of teen fiction.

Not teen fiction but have you read, 'A Clockwork Orange' if you're fancying dystopian stuff.

MegBusset · 13/05/2012 19:46

Have you read Game Of Thrones etc, quite trashy and easy to read but definitely page-turners.

Trills · 13/05/2012 19:53

Just downloaded Gone for my Kindle, thanks :)

Trills · 24/06/2012 19:36

Bumpity bump - Gone was great.

nooka · 24/06/2012 19:40

dd and I have just read Divergent by Veronica Roth. Very much in the same genre as Hunger Games and excellent I thought.

Somersaults · 24/06/2012 19:40

I can second Tomorrow When the War Began and the rest of that series. I've also been totally gripped by a series by Isobel Carmody I think. The first book is called Obernewtyn and it gets better throughout the series. Also Sabriel, Lirael and Abhorsen by Garth Nix? I remember being hooked by them a few years ago but don't remember too much about them now.

Somersaults · 24/06/2012 19:41

Oh yes, and I enjoyed Divergent and Insurgent too. The first was better but both good.

nooka · 24/06/2012 19:55

Good reminder there, I've just given Sabriel to dd now. I really like Garth Nix.
