My favourite books are Brave New World, 1984, Planet of the Apes, Lord of the Flies.

Can I have some suggestions for new reads please? :)

Sorry, read other people's lists rater than yours.
The Time Machine is good.
And apparently anything by Philip K Dick though they are too sci fi for me.

befuzzled · 10/04/2012 23:23

Oryx and Crake or whatever it is called by Margaret Atwood and the other one in the "series" (sorryname escapes me) - she claims they are not science fiction if that helps.

nkf · 10/04/2012 23:24

I also like The Wind Singer by William Nicholson. Teen fiction but well worth reading.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 11/04/2012 07:43

'The Wind Singer' is the first in a trilogy iirc - they are good. If you don't mind children's, the 'Mortal Engines' series are good too. The world has been ravaged and people survive in communities of wheeled citys, which try and 'eat' each other - survival of the fittest etc - but it's also a love story and has a strong female lead.

'Oryx And Crake' isn't much cop but the next one isn't bad.

'Never let Me Go' - I hated this but lots of people like it.

Yes to Patrick Ness- the first two are excellent; the final one not so good.

cities

VivaLeBeaver · 11/04/2012 14:35

The Passage by Justin Cronin.

echt · 12/04/2012 10:26

Super-Cannes by JG Ballard.

Oh lovely, thanks for all the replies! Will have a root through the thread, cheers everyone :)

Finished The Kraken Awakes - I liked the theme but found it quite, er, 'wordy' (???) at some parts. Fan idea though, just long stretches with not much happening :( boo!

Interestingly was speaking to a friend about books last night, he hated Day of the Triffids but loved Fahrenheit 451..

Lat semester I did a Utopia's & Dystopia's module as part of my English Lit degree. The only ones (that I can remember) that are missing from your list are the already mentioned Phillip K Dick with 'Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep' which became the film Blade Runner and 'Swastika Night' by Katharine Burdekin.

VivaLeBeaver · 13/04/2012 22:57

I love the stand, fab book.

juneybean · 13/04/2012 23:04

The Stand had too much padding, I liked the story but there was too much... just too much.

LoopyLoeufdePaques · 13/04/2012 23:06

Ugh. All my favourites have already been mentioned.

The best by far is Wyndham's The Chrysalids.

SkinnyVanillaLatte · 13/04/2012 23:13

Don't rate Riddley Walker.

Zombies:

World War Z Max Brooks
Day by Day Armageddon J L Bourne
Beyond Exile J L Bourne
The Morningstar Strain Series Z A Recht
The Autumn Series David Moody
Joe McKinney's zombie books are also good

Non zombie

Last Light and After Light Alex Scarrow
The Death of Grass John Christopher

gaunyerseljeannie · 13/04/2012 23:15

Herland by Charlotte Gilman Perkins, think it was written in about 1915... very weird.
Remember it vaguely, it was published byThe Women's Press in the 80's I think and about a society comprised entirely of women who had perfected reproduction without men Grin

SkinnyVanillaLatte · 13/04/2012 23:17

Allison Hewitt is trapped Madeliene Roux (zombies)

The other Mira Grant one is Deadline

Zombie Britannica Thomas Emerson.

Survivors Terry Nation

SkinnyVanillaLatte · 13/04/2012 23:23

Zombie apocalypse Stephen Jones and Peter Atkins

Outpost Adam Baker

and Zombie Britannica is by Emson, not Emerson,as I said before.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 13/04/2012 23:27

Keep meaning to get hold of, 'The Death Of Grass.'

I love, 'The Stand' so much but it makes me cry.

Yes to, 'The Passage.' I thought this would be dreadful and was surprised how much I enjoyed it.

'Herland' not v good except for historic interest imho but her, 'The Yellow wallpaper' is amazing (but doesn't belong on here!).

SkinnyVanillaLatte · 13/04/2012 23:33

The Death of Grass is a really good read,Remus.

Looking at some of the others you like,I think you'd enjoy it!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 13/04/2012 23:34

:) Thanks.

GrandPoohBah · 14/04/2012 15:56

The one after Oryx and Crake is called Year of the Flood, also very good.

I'd second World War Z and Survivors.

Children Of Men by P D James?

SkinnyVanillaLatte · 14/04/2012 16:51

On the third Day Rhys Thomas
