I have just put the first one on my kindle but have no idea what it's all about or anything. Is it good?

It is a trilogy of books and I have read all 3. And enjoyed them. They are not so much aimed at adults as teenagers. My DS 12 has read the first two and also really liked them. Saw the movie and it was fab.

They're an enjoyable enough read, lots of twists and turns, a wee bit far fetched in places (outside them being futuristic that is) but they are aimed at teenagers, so that might just be because I read them with an adults perspective. They're exciting, and I read all three one after the other, and was peeved when I had to wait a few weeks for the third one to be published Grin
I do like dystopian fiction though, always have, but if that's not your thing then you might not like them that much. It's a basic love story and struggle against a "wicked opressive state" but set in the future "after the apocalypse" type thing.

The Hunger Games are a reality show - only one of the entrants will survive and they literally have to kill each other. They are conscripted, though Katniss "volunteers" to take her little sister's place. I read The Hunger Games last year and finished Catching Fire and started Mockingjay on Friday morning.

NoraHelmer · 06/04/2012 08:34

I read The Hunger Games a couple of weeks ago. I really liked it, in spite of it being aimed at the young adult market :).

I'm just about to start Catching Fire. I didn't think they would be my kind of novel at all - not really keen on dystopian fiction, but I found the story gripping, although quite bloodthirsty at times.

CheerfulYank · 06/04/2012 08:38

I saw the movie before I read them, and really liked both the film and the trilogy. I think honestly it has a lot to say about greed, war, the nature of fame, our appetites for violence, the things we allow the governement to control in our lives, etc.

Focus on the story and characters, not the writing, and remember it was written for teens. :)

SomebodySaveMe · 06/04/2012 10:09

I quite like it so far although it does seem like a Battle Royale/ lord of the flies crossover! My brain keeps thinking its set in Japan/china though.

I love love love loved it, but then I have the emotional im maturity of a teenager Blush. I devour YA fiction. And it's well, written, unlike a certain very popular vampire romance.

Yes, the premise is similar to battle royale but the tone and feel of the novel is totally different. BR gloried in violence, whereas in HG it's all about relationships.

There are very few (no?) new premises in the world, but it's a great reinterpretation.

I'm also reading the his dark materials trilogy so I think I'm regressing in my reading material Grin

I wasnt impressed, no one told me they were teen books ( everyone at my work was reading them and raving about them ) I read the first 1 in an evening and decided not to buy the others

SomebodySaveMe · 08/04/2012 07:30

I just finished the trilogy. It didn't end how I was expecting but I did enjoy them. Think I'm going to see the film
Much better series than Twishite

The ending bothered me a little. It just seemed a bit odd.

There's a great review comparing it with Twilight that someone linked on Twitter.

I shall dig it out:)

CheerfulYank · 08/04/2012 07:38

EmilyPollifax, I adore your name. :)

You should pm me what you found odd about the ending because I am very interested but don't want to spoil it for anyone on this thread who is still reading!

Gincognito · 08/04/2012 13:57

I thought the ending was a little...well, I won't put the adjective here as its a bit of a spoiler. Ooh, maybe we could have another thread?

SomebodySaveMe · 08/04/2012 14:29

Just started a spoiler alert discussion thread Grin

I loved the Hunger Games trilogy. It's not a litterary work of art but it grabs you from the start and is additive reading. I'ts an easy read that isn't brain taxing, good holiday reading or commuter reading. Read all of them in a weekend as i couldn't put them down.

milti · 09/04/2012 22:27

the books are far better than the film, an original idea, strong female character, full of adventure and a bit of romance. NOT better than twilight though!!!!

Gincognito · 10/04/2012 07:40

To be fair...not really an original idea (Battle Royale, Logan's Run) but definitely WAY better than Twilight :o

GsyPotatoPieEyed · 10/04/2012 23:03

I read Hunger Games last week and loved it. A real page-turner. I made DH do the driving on Good Friday so I could finish reading it in the car Grin. I've started Catching Fire today.

solidgoldbrass · 10/04/2012 23:09

I enjoyed them too. They are not great literature, but the pace is good and Katniss at least has some guts and isn't a whiny-arsed Mary-Sue.

CheerfulYank · 11/04/2012 06:01

I hate that I was so sucked into the "love triangle"...but I really was. Blush

Gincognito · 11/04/2012 12:22

Has anyone read Ashes by Ilsa Bick? I would recommend if you enjoyed HG.

NatureAbhorsAHoover · 11/04/2012 21:51

Gin is it for grownups or more a YA book?

ScorpionQueen · 11/04/2012 22:01

I just put Hunger Games on my kindle and am hooked.

Gincognito · 12/04/2012 12:25

It's being double-branded (so, two separate covers for two sections in the bookshop) but it's definitely YA.
