I need a new book please. Bit of escapism, not too romantic or sad. The last book I read was 'a spot of bother' & I loved it. Really funny but had some serious points too.
Thankyou in advance : )

Running with scissors. Hilarious biography. Apparently, although u can't believe its true. It's quite explicit though.

bucketbetty · 02/04/2012 05:31

Sorry. I can't believe its true.

The ones that spring to mind as being actually laugh out loud til the tears run down my leg face funny are Gerald Durrell's "My Family and Other Animals" and the two sequels. They are hilarious, and I can read them over and over and still find them funny Grin
The other two are "Garden of the Gods" and "Birds, Beasts, and Relatives"
Gervaise Phinn's autobiographical books are really funny too, but don't read "All the Lonely People" if you want to laugh because it's heartrendingly sad. I was caught out because all his others were side-splitting Confused
Tom Holt's stuff, and Terry Pratchett's Discworld novels are funny if you want fantasy type fiction.

Thanks Pom & bucket. I will have a look on amazonSmile

Bill Bryson's books are very good and very funny. One of my sisters was reading (I think) Notes From A Small Island and made the mistake of reading it on a train. Got some very strange looks from her fellow passengers because of her efforts not to laugh uncontrollaby. [busmile]

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 07/04/2012 20:17

Yes to Bill Bryson. I hated 'A Spot Of Bother' though, so might not be the best person to suggest anything. Have you read 'A Curious Incident...?' Tis a zillion times better than, 'A Spot Of Bother.'

KurriKurri · 07/04/2012 20:17

I enjoyed Deaf Sentence by David lodge - very funny but also very moving.

Lucky Jim by Kingsley Amis is also very funny.

KurriKurri · 07/04/2012 20:26

If you fancy trying something a bit older two books that always make me laugh out loud are Three Men in a Boat (Jerome K Jerome) and The Diary of a Nobody (George and Weedon Grossmith)

theoldtrout01876 · 08/04/2012 00:05

Lillian Beckwith "The Sea for Breakfast' and the others on her series. They are quite old but soooo funny. They are about an English school teacher that retires to the highland of Scotland and the people in her village

Iwantcandy · 08/04/2012 00:29

Try anything by Carl hiassen Grin

NoraHelmer · 08/04/2012 09:25

If you like crime fiction, I'd recommend Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series, starting with One for the Money. Very funny - I love the interaction with her family, especially Grandma Mazur and the pithy remarks her dad makes :).

JustOneMoreQuestion · 08/04/2012 18:48

Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency is one of the funniest books I've read. Don't go off the spin-off series, read the book, it has proper snort out loud bits!

IAmSherlocked · 08/04/2012 18:55

Ooh I came on here to recommend Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series too - proper laugh out loud books and there are LOADS of them, so if you like them, you're set up for ages!

Bill Bryson is one of the only other writers who can be relied on to make me laugh out loud.

Alltheseboys · 10/04/2012 00:26

Remus
I read a 'spot of bother' because of 'curious incident' & agree the first was alot better but I still felt it was a good book. Thanks for the advice: )

Dirk Gently is brilliant! I love Douglas Adams

Can you stand Alan Partridge? DH had to pace the room crying with laughter over We Need To Talk About Alan

anniewoo · 10/04/2012 00:37

Texasville by Larry Mc Murty

joanofarchitrave · 10/04/2012 00:38

French Revolutions by Tim Moore
The Plague and I by Betty Macdonald

LondonKitty · 10/04/2012 00:42

P.J. Wodehouse. Anything by him. Still hilarious.

YNK · 10/04/2012 00:53

A Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian and the follow up, Two Caravans. I cant remember the authors name but I know shes from Sheffield.
Both books had me in stitches!

JustOneMoreQuestion · 10/04/2012 01:01

YNK I've read the first one, very surprising, really enjoyed it! Have the second but not got round to reading it yet, you may have spurred me on! :o

SillyBeardyDaddyman · 10/04/2012 01:04

The tent, the bucket and me by Emma Kennedy had me howling. Without a doubt the funniest book I've ever read!

YNK · 10/04/2012 01:27

JOMQ Two Caravans is possibly the funniest. I've put myself in the mood for a reread!

Alltheseboys · 10/04/2012 10:39

YNK I'm so thick. I saw her on question time I didn't realise a short history of tractors was a funny book. I thought she was obsessed with Ukrainian tractors! She seemed so serious next to David dimblebyGrin
