Has anyone read "An Instance of the Fingerpost" bt Iain Pears? It was talked about on Radio 4 today?

Any reviews?

Thanks

Yes, but some years ago.

I really enjoyed it and found it quite gripping. It hasn't left a huge impact on my life and thoughts. Can't remember any of the characters. I think it is more like the Shardlake mysteries than some amazing literary event tbh. That's not really a criticism - I love the Shardlake books.

Yes, many years ago. I can't remember the details now but I did love it and remember thinking at the time that it was one of the best books I'd ever read.

Are these the sort of reviews you are looking for?

BellaBearisWideAwake · 07/03/2012 08:34

Yes and it was great but not going to read it again (my criteria for my top tier of favourite books)

I also love the shardlakes

Yes, many years ago and certainly wouldn't rush to read it again. Am I right in remembering there's a whole scene involving a C17th attempt at blood transfusion or have I lost that particular plot?! Confused

LeeCoakley · 07/03/2012 15:53

I enjoyed it, although I think I got a bit muddled halfway through Blush. Would I read it again? Possibly. Regarding Shardlake, I love him but I am ashamed to say I got a quarter of the way through the last one and haven't picked it up again. Maybe too much of the same? I will try again at some point though.

Not read that one but have read the Giotto one and Stone's Fall, both of which I enjoyed.

Thanks all. I've read a number of reviews that said it was a tad too in depth on the political/historical front and they "lost their way" a bit whilst trying to plow through it.

Will try my library....that way, if I get 100 pages in and don't like it, back it goes.

Yes - have read that and 'Stone's Fall' and disliked both of them. I thought they were clumsy and long-winded and relied too much on laboured 'twists.' The Shardlakes are a zillion times better.
