Why isn't there a topic for graphic novels?

Loads of people read them nowadays and they aren't just for teenage boys, despite what some may think! I demand a section for discussion of this kind of literature!

My DH has piles of them! I've still to read one though :)

misslinnet · 01/03/2012 23:47

Maybe if enough people start discussing them they'll get their own section?

Any particular graphic novel you want to discuss? Smile

Valdeeves · 02/03/2012 15:19

I've read a few? I like Maus and The Crow. I also read most of The Sandman series. I think my love of them stemmed from reading my Big Bro's 2000AD comic when we were growing up.

Abcinthia · 02/03/2012 17:01

I've read The Crow.

I read a lot of Manga from time to time. Death Note, Shaman King, Sailor Moon, Cardcaptor Sakura, Battle Royale (also read the novel and seen the films) and so on.

Trills · 02/03/2012 17:03

Because there are already too many enough bloody topics?

You can start as many threads as you like about graphic novels in Adult Fiction - after all it is still Fiction and still for Adults.

DebbieD78 · 03/03/2012 18:28

I've been reading the Walking Dead. My hubby bought me the omnibus edition with over 1000 pages. Really good although the plot differs quite a lot from the TV series and it is quite a bit darker and more violent, loads of swearing as well.

Persepolis is very good - it's by Marjane Satrapi and is about her childhood in Iran. She's also written Embroideries, which is very very funny indeed.

Campaspe · 03/03/2012 18:47

And The Night Bookmobile and Asterious Polyp. I'm interested in graphic novels that might appeal to women and would love some recommendations. I don't want anything set in space or that features super-heroes.

DebbieD78 · 03/03/2012 19:00

Whats wrong with superheroes? It's sexist to say they don't appeal to women.

Persepolis is one that might be more your cup of tea. It's about a girl growing up in Iran.

Nothing wrong with superheroes, some of them are very entertaining.

But moving away from superheroes, the Sandman books are good, as are the Fables ones.

Cherrypi · 03/03/2012 21:04

Loved the night bookmobile. My all time favourite graphic novel is Fun Home - a tragicomic memoir by Alison Bechdel. It's about a girl growing up in a funeral home.

GossipMonger · 03/03/2012 21:05

Neither. It means illustrated. Comics for grown ups.

Hellblazer. John Constantine. Put the keanu reeves travesty out if mind and read it and fantasise.

Gossip, I've seen Daniel X and Maximum Ride graphic novels / manga in the shops.

I think they're based on James Patterson books.

And graphic novels aren't necessarily gruesome. You can get graphic novel versions of Shakespeare's plays and Pride and Prejudice. Those aren't particularly gruesome.

DebbieD78 · 04/03/2012 19:34

Some of Shakespeare's plays are gruesome!

OP posts:
misslinnet · 04/03/2012 21:02

Yes, I suppose some of Shakespeare's plays can get a bit bloody...

Perhaps I should have stopped at Pride & Prejudice.

Valdeeves · 04/03/2012 22:21

I've read a few of the Shakespeare ones and I felt they really
worked in that format. As a kid I used to read my mum and Dad's really old spiderman and superman annuals - they were brilliant.
I don't read enough graphic novels these days as I see them
as a real luxury, they are not cheap!

Valdeeves · 04/03/2012 22:22

I've read Watchmen too

misslinnet · 04/03/2012 22:44

Have you tried your library Valdeevs?

The library where I used to live had a good selection - Watchmen, Sandman, Preacher, V for Vendetta, plus lots of manga and superhero ones like Superman, Batman etc.

Magneto · 04/03/2012 22:46

I bought Buffy Season 8 just before Christmas. It's brilliant, really works well as a comic.

DebbieD78 · 05/03/2012 23:27

One good thing about graphic novels is they hold their value, when you've read them, you can sell them on ebay or amazon and get most of what you spent back.
