Yes, definitely, welcome to the world of Anne Shirley, and her bosom friends!

tribpot · 11/02/2012 18:26

Kindred spirits, Pandy! Grin And yes, you will enjoy them for sure.

silverbay · 11/02/2012 18:28

I loved the television series in the 80's (i think it was 80's). No idea why it's taken me so long to get hold of the books.

Yes

QED · 11/02/2012 18:29

You will :)

Auntiestablishment · 11/02/2012 18:30

Yes. The opening, with Mrs Rachel Lynde as the world's nosiest neighbour is wonderful and it goes on from there.

I like Anne best of those, followed by Little Women (there are more in both series if you like the first).
Katy and the Prairie-dwellers are far behind.

Snusmumriken · 11/02/2012 18:30

Yes! The books are amazing.

silverbay · 11/02/2012 18:31

Hurrah! I love a long series, especially when I get them all at once and can just wallow in them.

fivegomadindorset · 11/02/2012 18:33

Oh yes.

Popbiscuit · 11/02/2012 18:34

Anne is my favourite of all of the above. Absolutely enchanting. Some of my favourite literary characters ever. Enjoy!

OnlyANinja · 11/02/2012 18:34

:o I@m not sure this is exactly Adult fiction...

Did you know there were 5 Katy books? And they're all free on Kindle?
What Katy Did
" at school
" next
Clover
In the High Valley

OnlyANinja · 11/02/2012 18:34

This has spoilers but is very funny

silverbay · 11/02/2012 18:35

I've read all the little women, all the Katies (including Clover and the High Valley) and all the Ingalls-wilders.

can't think of anything comparable from english authors ?

OP posts:
silverbay · 11/02/2012 18:36

I never thought of it not being adult fiction Blush

Ooh you've inspired me to read this again. Must have been about 12 when I read it (36 years ago!), but I still remember scenes and I know I was really taken by it.
The TV series I saw was an English production I think, but I loved it.

We're adults, they're fiction - ergo it's Adult Fiction Grin . I take your point Ninja but I get a lot out of the Anne books that passed me by as a child, and of course she herself is a grown-up for most of the books.

Ahhhhh, swoony Gilbert Blythe from the 80s TV adaptation. Under no circs watch the sequel where Anne single-handedly ends World War I (or something like that) but the original series is delightful.

I can't think of anything exactly comparable either. Our series about young women (at least the ones I can think of) have tended to be school-based, with Antonia Forest perhaps being the closest, albeit in a different time period and in a class of her own in terms of the quality of her writing. And her characters never grow up! (At least not yet).

silverbay · 11/02/2012 18:50

Ninja, that link is brilliant, I loved it.

celticlassie · 11/02/2012 18:50

I loved all these books, but Anne is definitely the best. I love how dry and ironic it is in touches, it makes me laugh out loud but I can still cry at the sad bits.

OnlyANinja · 11/02/2012 18:54

I think I have read some Anne, but I was probably 9 at the time. Don't remember it all that well. Remembered Katy very well and re-read them recently because the Katy books are all free on Kindle.

I have downloaded all the Little Women sequels too, but they're a bit preachy.

OnlyANinja · 11/02/2012 18:55

I don't mean the sequels are preachy, I mean that to get to the sequels I have to re-read the first one, and it's all about being good. (a bit like Katy is all about being bloody ladylike)

hanahsaunt · 11/02/2012 18:55

Oh Anne! I love the Anne books. I am so glad of dd (last of four after 3 boys) so that I can buy all of the aforementioned but especially Anne.

GossipMonger · 11/02/2012 18:55

oooooooooh I love Anne of Green Gables!

Gilbert...............bless........

charitygirl · 11/02/2012 18:58

OMG you so will! And then you can read the 'emily' series by the same author!

These books are definitely the 'young adult' fiction of their day, but nowt wrong with that.

shockers · 11/02/2012 19:07

Yes!

worriermum · 15/02/2012 06:15

Anne is the BEST of that bunch. You will lurrvve her/them/it. You lucky thing, still having your hours to spend with Anne. Please post back when you are deep into the series to let us know if we are right.
