I know these books aren't popular with mumsnetters but I really enjoyed them. Has anyone got any recommendations for something similar. I have read loads of new mum/yummy mummy type books so am not really looking for more of those. Also I don't want something too sad ( eg. My Sisters Keeper) I'm looking for something romantic :)

I think the Time Traveller's Wife was billed as the 'new' The Lovely Bones - which is a really good read (and a little bit romantic in parts).

Thanks :)
I have seen the film and it was so scary. I don't think I'd enjoy the book. I don't enjoy being frightened . Thanks though

I am reading Her Fearful Symmetry by the same author of Time Travelers Wife. It's good so far.

ExitPursuedByaBear · 29/01/2012 21:51

I loved The Time Traveler's Wife. Didn't realise the MN Jury didn't approve.

The Lovely Bones was a good read, but not as good as TTTW imo.

pinkandsparklytoo · 29/01/2012 21:57

Have you tried books by Nicholas Sparks? My sister quite likes them.

PotteringAlong · 29/01/2012 22:04

I capture the castle is an excellent book.

The island - Victoria hislop

Notes from a small island -Andrea leavy

History of love - Nicola krauss (I think!)

emsyj · 29/01/2012 22:06

I haven't seen the film, I didn't find the book scary at all sorry, I'm not keen on being scared either! I guess it's different when it's a first person narrative in a book rather than scenes on a screen.

My favourite book ever is Making History by Stephen Fry. I enjoyed that book sooooo much (not scary, promise!)

VinoEsmeralda · 29/01/2012 22:08

I second The Island by Victoria Hislop and another good read, please dont be put of by the title, is Love life by Ray Kluun. Its based on a true story and v v good

MarjorieAntrobus · 29/01/2012 22:32

How about The Memory Keepers Daughter?

ExitPursuedByaBear · 30/01/2012 12:38

Victoria Hislop has written another book about the Spanish Civil War, the name of which escapes me but it is also very good.

I have also enjoyed Kate Morton's books. Easy reading but who cares!

MackerelOfFact · 30/01/2012 12:55

It's not a very similar story, but [http://www.amazon.co.uk/Girls-Lori-Lansens/dp/1844083667 The Girls] is a similar kind of read.

You also might enjoy [http://www.amazon.co.uk/Room-Emma-Donoghue/dp/0330519018 Room] if you've not already read it.

Bollocks.

Try East of the Sun by Julia Gregson.

It's the story of three young women who travel out to India by boat in the days of the Raj, one to get married, the other her best friend, and the third going to work as a governess. Very readable.

CDMforever · 30/01/2012 18:59

Second The Girls and The Memory Keeper's Daughter. Both gorgeous, gorgeous books.

mumofthreekids · 31/01/2012 19:50

I second I capture the castle. Also recommend In Pursuit of Love by Nancy Mitford and The Photograph by Penelope Lively.

spottyscarf · 31/01/2012 20:03

I loved Her Fearful Symmetry too. Also try anything by Maggie O Farrell, she is fab- not chick lit at all but great stories with strong female characters.

PandaNot · 31/01/2012 20:06

I would agree with Maggie OFarrell I've loved everything by her.

mumofthreekids · 31/01/2012 20:09

Oh yes forgot about Maggie O'Farrell, I love her too!

spottyscarf · 31/01/2012 20:16

Oh and the author of One Day also wrote Starter for 10, which is hilarious (and a very funny film with the yummy James McAvoy)

Have you read Possession by AS Byatt? I seem to remember really enjoying it.

The Lovely Bones, so much better than the film. truly shite (the film)

Or the Alchemist by Paulo Coelho>

princessProudmel · 01/02/2012 13:29

I've read lots of the reviews and lots of these books are described as 'dark' or about death/ghosts...!
I don't think the book i want exists!
I want romance ( not too mills and boon) unrequited love, etc ! maybe modern day setting.
Maybe I should write it myself Grin
Thanks for suggestions i am googling them all.

Would Persuasion fit the bill? I know it isn't modern, but covers the romance/unrequited love bit. If you've got a kindle, then Amazon have got a deal at the moment to buy it together with Amanda Grange's Captain Wentworth's diary for 77p.
