I haven't but a colleague of mine is on the list so will definitely read it.

Socci - Yup I agree with you - there are a few books that are outside my comfort zone too - but IMO that's half the fun ....
Last year I read about 80% of the books - most of which I loved - a couple which I couldn't quite "get" ... but I am glad that I read them ... I want to broaden my horizons - and feel that in a small way it helps me branch out - on a literary basis

So I have joined the book club - and I am half way through The History of Love and I am really enjoying it.

mmm - I think they are sort of literary fiction ..... as some of them have occurred on various "lists" ... whitbread or booker IYKWIM

R & J list here . I think the latest one is 'Labyrinth' by Kate Mosse (?) which I flicked through in Tesco's this morning and wasn't instantly grabbed, but might give a go. Has anyone read it?
The only ones I 've read on that list are 'Feel' and the Jodi Piccoult one [bubblehead emoticon] loved both, and actually 'Feel' is one of the best books I've read in years - more about the bizareness of modern celebrity than a biography really.

I started the time travellers wife a little time ago but finding it really hard to get my head around. Would be interested if anyone else has read it, does it get any easier?

I read The Promise of Happiness and didn't enjoy it much. It was well written but I didn't empathise with the characters and found a lot of it slow at the time. Reflecting on it now though there is a lot that happens and my knowledge of stained glass windows increased for a little while (already forgotten I'm afraid). I certainly didn't find it a funny novel. Perhaps I'll reread it one day in a different frame of mind and enjoy it more.

I've been meaning to read The American Boy. Just keep getting sidetracked by schlocky thrillers though!

WigWamBam · 27/01/2006 14:15

I bought Arthur and George by Julian Barnes this morning, read some of it over a coffee and some more while I was waiting to see the dentist, and I am already hooked. It's not what you would describe as an "easy read" but that's what I enjoy about Julian Barnes. So far it seems quite profound, and I can't wait to read more.

I bought The American Boy this morning, Turquoise.

Have become depressed at my reading matter since having the children - seem to read chick lit most of the time (and not good chick lit at that ), when once upon a time I used to enjoy reading books that were, shall we say, just a little more challenging.

So have decided to read some of the books on R&J's lists (past and present).

Have so far read THe Lovely Bones and My Sister's Keeper - thought both were fab (and possibly an 'easy' introduction into more profound books!!

I really enjoyed The Shadow of the Wind (I think I read it before it was a R&J recommendation), and I liked My Sister's Keeper (though I haven't liked anything else I've read by Jodie Picoult.

Gave up on The Promise of Happiness - just couldn't bring myself to care about any of the characters.

Also gave up on Labyrinth when I realised I was half way through and nothing had happened (still a damn sight better than the Da Vinci Code though)

And I'm reading The Time Traveller's Wife at the moment - enjoying it, but if I think about the time travelling conceit too much it makes my head hurt.
