I need inspiration for books to read

I am a confirmed chick lit reader who needs to find a new author to read.

I have read all of:

Maeve Binchy
Joanna Trollope
Sophie Kinsella
Isabel Wolff

and probably pothers I can't remember right now. I have been reading all the Narnia Chronicles recently.

My brain can't cope with anything too challenging, especially during middle of the night feeds with DD.

Any suggestions?

Try Jodi Picoult - a bit more than chick lit but if you really want chick lit try Judy Astley this still makes me laugh.

JackieNo · 16/01/2006 12:33

Wendy Holden? Quite enjoyed most of those.

JenumGeranium · 16/01/2006 12:34

Cecialia Ahern is very good!

JenumGeranium · 16/01/2006 12:34

sorry - should be Cecilia Ahern

JenumGeranium · 16/01/2006 12:35

oh and Jane Green too!

PiccadillyCircus · 16/01/2006 12:36

I have read some Judy Astley - and I think I've read that one .

Will have a look in the library for all the suggested authors - thank you

Freya North is excellent

acnebride · 16/01/2006 12:52

Try Erica James? I love chick-lit too, she is a little 'quieter' than most chick lit authors but I find she hits something like the same requirement for me.

Have you tried Catherine Alliott? The later ones get better than the earlier ones.

And have you tried Mike Gayle? I completely dislike his books but have still read them all!

PiccadillyCircus · 16/01/2006 12:54

Have read all the Freya North books (I think although will check )

Have added Erica James and Catherine Alliott to the list.

Marion Keyes?
Stella Duffy - not quite chick lit, about a Lesbian PI, but a nice easy funny read

Plug plug plug...
Here's the link to my mum's book, frothy funny chicklit indeed with some touching bits too:
Scuba Dancing by Nicola Slade

Love libby Purves

SoniaL · 19/01/2006 21:40

Try Carole Matthews, Jill Mansell, Chris Manby and Jenny Colgan. If you want slapstick, lol funny then I highly recommend Janet Evanovitch. Not really chick lit but absolutely hilarious

mummytosteven · 19/01/2006 21:43

Bill Bryson. Not chick lit but light and funny.

ambercat · 19/01/2006 21:55

Have you tried Robyn Sisman, Adele Parks ,Anna Maxted or Lisa Jewell?

megandsoph · 19/01/2006 22:09

megandsoph · 19/01/2006 22:12

or anyone else

Sugarmag · 20/01/2006 16:26

Definitely Penny Vincenzi. Never read anything by her before but I just read Sheer Abandon - all 700 pages of it! - and couldn't put it down. I'm vey excited by this discovery because she's written loads. My other absolute favourite is Cathy Kelly. I love the way she develops her characters - more engaging that way - a bit like Maeve Binchy. Some of the other authors mentioned here (Jane Green, Catherine Alliot, Jill Mansel, Jenny Colgan, Freya North) are all good but a bit too "fluffy" if you know what I mean. They're a good quick read, but very little substance.

expatinscotland · 20/01/2006 16:30

Why not start out w/some books that have become films? Memoirs of a Geisha, The Constant Gardener, etc.?

layla · 20/01/2006 16:43

I'm really loving memoirs of a geisha at the mo.

Have done the chic lit thing and really gone off it all in a big way.

Have really enjoyed John Irvings books.I can recommend Widow for one year and Life according to Garp.

Got Memoirs of a geisha for 2.99 in HMV.

Must read Sharon Osbournes autobiography.
