That's nice dear :o

andaPontyinaPearTreeeeee · 01/01/2012 10:19

What were they then? What was good, what was bad?

I've been on LOTR and Sophie's World for ages, determined to finish them before starting more - problem with working in a library is that I see loads I want to read RIGHT NOW!

happynew2012 · 01/01/2012 10:19

Blimey how do you find time to read more than one a week?!

OneHandWrapping · 01/01/2012 10:24

Any you'd recommend?

AtYourCervix · 01/01/2012 10:32

Reread lots of Jilly Copers - theres always room for Jilly

The Passion - Jeanette Winterson

Utter crap:

I've read 49 since July. This doesn't include work-related reading (work in publishing). At least 25 of those in July & August whilst on annual leave.

happynew2012 · 01/01/2012 12:27

Ha ha I don't either! Must put more effort into reading & less into mumsnetting Grin
if I read every evening instead of mn'ing I too could read 50+ books...

happynew2012 · 01/01/2012 12:28

When I used to work full time I read loads on train journey during commute & in my lunch hour
Bloomin' kids .....

talkingnonsense · 01/01/2012 12:30

If you liked poppy z brite ( who is now a he by the way) try sarah monette or Sarah Rees Brennan. Would definitely reccomend- and I like jilly cooper, georgette heyer, dick Francis, etc.

Abcinthia · 01/01/2012 15:41

I read 108 books in 2011 Blush

I usually do not watch tv or go online in the evenings so I read for 3+ hours after my DD goes to bed.

I haven't read any Jilly Cooper yet. I've heard a lot of good things about her though, so I might have a look the next time I go to the library.

Mrsrobertduvall · 01/01/2012 21:25

I read about 150 books.
Like Abcinthia, I don't watch much tv and like going to bed at 9pm and reading. I have read 12 books over Christmas period.

ObviouslyOblivious · 01/01/2012 21:27

I read 1 and a half! DS was born and is distracting, and I'm not commuting.

NanAstley · 01/01/2012 23:53

Cervix and abcinthia are your children older and have barricaded themselves in their room? Only asking because I need hope that I too will read more some day in the future. At the moment, with 2 dds under 5, I consider myself lucky if I can read more than a page a day Sad

Abcinthia · 02/01/2012 08:48

I've only got one child and she's 4. I went off reading for a few years, when I was pregnant and when DD was younger, because I was too tired and just couldn't concentrate on books. It was only in the last 2 years that I've started to read more again.

BabeRuthless · 02/01/2012 09:06

Since I got a kindle I've found my reading has increased so much more. Last year I totted up 78 (I keep a list of what I've read. I read a lot of crime fiction series & need to keep track of where I'm up to, don't judge me ok?) and the year before was 65. Also I've been blessed with the ability to read very quickly. Would quite like to hit the 100 mark this year. Lord knows I've enough books lined up.

inmysparetime · 02/01/2012 09:10

I haven't counted my reading, but I get 5 or 6 books from the library every 2 weeks, and reread books we own. I must read 6 or 7 books a week, how do people not find the time, the TV is total tripe at the momentBlush? I will count my books this year and see how many I really read (I have read 3 this year alreadyBlush)

DuchessofMalfi · 02/01/2012 10:13

I've started keeping a record of the books I read now. I used to be a prolific reader when I was a teenager, getting through huge piles of books rapidly, but sadly that tailed off and since I had children I've barely managed to read more than half a dozen books a year. It is getting better though, now that the children are getting a bit more independent. I'm setting myself a low target of 20 books to read this year, so I'll be delighted if I beat that, and won't be disappointed if I don't reach an unachievable target.

DuchessofMalfi · 02/01/2012 10:18

Reading through earlier posts, I can now see where I'm going wrong - too much trashy tv (must stop), housework (although that isn't really top priority in this house) and cooking (nope love that, so must find a way to prop the kindle up in the kitchen while I cook Grin).

I can read books very quickly.....something like a John Irving novel in 4-5 hours.
