Anyone non uk have one yet or played with one...I keep reading such varying reviews from best thing ever to wouldn't give it houseroom. I know a lot of the reviews are kindle v ipad which i don't think is really fair so would love to hear anyone's experiences

DH got one for Xmas - it's quite heavy compared to a normal Kindle, and I've only had a little play around with it but it's quite easy to use and intuitive.

I was expecting the backlight to turn off when reading - it doesn't, but it's easy to adjust.

I haven't used an iPad though so can't really compare on that front.

I think you need to wrestle it from him and have a proper play - mumsnet requires this of you so it is in a good cause

Got one and love it -just like mini iPad to use. Totally recommend as good range of features and more portable than iPad

oooo - thats the sort of enabling talk I want to hear Xmas Grin I know its probably not going to be as "good" as an Ipad but to be fair the spec and price are a lot different...cant wait for them to hit uk now

oh interesting. anyone want a kidney? slightly used?

Well I'm MNing on it now.
Downsides: the typing screen isn't as big (doesn't expand)
Some of the keyboard bits are in different places (commas, full stops) and if you're used to an iphone it doesn't autocorrect 'i'm' to 'I'm' for example.
delete is where return should be.
It doesn't always capitalise sentences.
it has that funny predictive thing at the top like a nokia where it tries to guess what word you're aiming for and then you tap it.
all of which is making me a bit slow and laborious but that could just be me not being used to this format.
Ill browse active convos and report back...

probably way way too late, but had a bit of a play on one the other day. 2 things that stand out to me are the fact it's backlit makes it hard on the eyes, so just like reading off iPad, and 2. the battery life is crap, similar to iPad, and not like 'traditional' kindle which lasts ages.

Is anyone using one outside of the US? I got one for DH for xmas and I still haven't managed to download any apps for it. Also, a major difference between the "proper" kindle and the fire is that i can deregister and register between mine and my husband's accounts on my proper kindle and all the books that I have on it stay on the actual kindle - when i deregister on the fire, it wipes all the books so we've ended up just keeping him registered on my account so we can share books.... but then he has all of my books on his fire (and there are quite a few!) and he has to flick through all of them to get to what he wants.

When I work out how to get apps I think it will be quite good - and he likes it for internet and email but it's not an ipad and it's not a kindle - it's kind of inbetween.
