I got it as a present and am put off by the white cover and the mention of paedophiles.

Please tell me it's not typical misery lit.

I know I should just try it, but things tend to stick in my head and can't be unread.

Actually it was written by a good friend of mine.
I've read it and thought that as a first novel written by a previously illiterate person it is pretty wonderful.

However I really dislike misery lit as a genre and have never read one of those books on principle. So I was on the look out for tedious cliches - and there were none, as far as I recognised.

I think she has done a great job of telling her life story so far. The thread of abuse isn't overwhelming but you are aware of it and do read on, wanting to know what happened in the end. Other elements in the story are also fascinating and the relationship with the writer's father is another interesting thread.

I found the book very interesting because I know a lot of the people who are in it. I would like to hear what you think of it too.

Thankyou very much for taking the time to reply.

It was a gift from someone who normally chooses well for me and has indroduced me to some of my favourite authors, so I was hoping they had not had a complete personality change and sent me a dud.

I will give it a try then; after all I love The hotel new hampshire and that could have been sold as being about lesbianism and incest. Shock

I bought it from the author herself as she had a stall at a fair/book launch of FFT in Brighton. I also worried about gruelling paedo storylines but bought it anyway and am looking forward to reading it.

I don't thinks that those storylines are gruelling particularly.
Above all I saw this as a triumph for the author to have produced this book; and I hope that she writes more and continues to develop her talent.
