Can anyone recommend good historical thrillers/ supernatural novels?

Hope someone can help! Looking for some historical thrillers or supernatural books to load onto my new kindle. I really enjoyed Robert Harris's Pompeii and Enigma, and I also really liked Kate Mosse's Labyrinth and Sepulchure for example. Any ideas?

A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness and The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova. Or The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon. All absolutely brilliant and jealous of people who haven't read them yet!

Barbara Erskine's come to mine but they might be a bit girly. Grin

Seconding Deborah Harkness, that is one brilliant book!

If you're looking for historical/supernatural blend you'd like Ysabel by Guy Gavriel Kay - not at all his usual style, very little fantasy, but very very good.

The Rose Labyrinth by Titania Hardie is a fascinating idea, if not the best-written book in the world. Also The Little Stranger by Sarah Waters; not set in ancient times, obviously, but historical and a proper, creepy ghost story.

Lindsey Davis has a servies following Falco, a Roman who becomes a detective which is rather fun.

Any of the Matthew Shardlake books by C J Sansom

All set in the time of Henry VIII...I'm currently reading Heartstone, but there is also Dark Fire, Sovereign, Dissolution and Revelation (not necessarily in that order.

Also a book called "Mistress of the Art of Death" - I think by Ariana Franklin

The Seance is a good read along those lines, can't remember who it is by and also In the Company of Liars (very freaky book) by karen maitland.

Oh, also the Brother Cadfael books. I haven't read them (keep meaning to) but they're meant to be good.

Thanks so much for the recommendations, I've added them to my wish list! I've just read A Discovery of Witches and absolutely loved it - I can't wait to see what happens next, is the next one due out next year? Definitely right up my street, one of those where even though it's a long book it ends way too soon! I'd looked up the C J Sansom ones due to other discussions on the forum and they look really good too.
Haven't heard of most of others, will get on to amazon pronto! Definitely all on right lines - keep them coming!

An Instance of the Fingerpost - I read it years ago but it has stayed with me, so I always recommend it.

Immolation of Eve by Helen Fields is great.

seriouslytwisted · 02/01/2012 22:24

I agree with LadyClariceCannockMonty. The Little Stranger by Sarah Waters is set in postwar Britain and it is very atmospheric. Waters is a very good writer.

SilverMachine · 02/01/2012 22:29

Totally agree with Sarah Waters, all of her books are very compelling.

Wolf Hall or Beyond Black by Hilary Mantel are also good.

A Company of Liars and The Owl Killers by Karen Maitland. Jonathan strange and Mr Norrell by Susanna Clarke. Anything by Barbara Erskine (although they can get a little far fetched).
