My grandad is 90 and doesn't want for much but does like a good read. He would really like some good family drama type books for Christmas. To be honest it isn't the sort of thing I generally read so don't really know of any good authors in this genre.

Please can anyone give me the names of some good authors. I'd like to get him a good selection, so the more the merrier.

Thank you

Kate Atkinson's Behind the scenes at the museum?

Moln · 02/12/2011 21:36

Behind the scences at the museum is brilliant!

Being a big thicko though i have to ask what do you mean by family drama?

MyCatIsABiggerBastardThanYours · 02/12/2011 21:45

Thanks for those. I'll go and look.

I guess what he means are stories about big family events - maybe a bit Catherine Cookson ish? Stories of families going through emotional upheavals and such but all pulling together.

I hope thats what he means anyway. Guess I'll know for sure on Boxing Day!

What about RF Delderfield's novels - a couple I can recall are To Serve Them All My Days, and A Horseman Riding By. Not sure if you can still get them though - might be worth a search on Amazon?

Fall of Giants by Ken Follett - it's the first one in a trilogy. (Warning - it's the size of a large brick, so maybe not ideal for reading in bed!)

I like the Cazalet Chronicles by Elizabeth Jane Howard. There are four I think: Casting Off, Marking Time, Confusion and The Light Years. They follow a family through the war years.

I second Ken follet, beloved of by my dad and fil. I'd also reccomend Malcolm macdonald world from rough stones. It's one in a series but can't remember what the others are called. It's about the building of railways in the uk and is a poverty to riches type story but with enough bloke stuff in to keep a man engaged.

I came on to recommend Ken Follett too Xmas Grin, either the Pillars of the Earth/World Without End pair or Fall of Giants. All big family sagas, the first set starts in the Middle Ages, Fall of Giants is around the WW1 era.

VivaLeBeaver · 06/12/2011 12:11

I second the Cazalet chronicles.

Also the Phillippa Gregory books - Wideacre trilogy.

munstersmum · 06/12/2011 12:16

Agree with RF Delderfield
Cannot agree with Ken Follett - they're the same story rehashed
What about Poldark?

The best family drama book in the world is East of Eden by Steinbeck. Has he read it? It's wonderful and long, and complex yet simple, lovely lovely lovely.
