Hi,

I'm a student of publishing and it would be great if you could answer these questions for me:

Are you in a book group?

Have you ever read 'The House with the Green Shutters'? It's a classic Scottish book, has been referred to as 'the Trainspotting of late 19th century Scotland'. Is it a title you'd be interested in reading whether as an individual, or as a book group title?

Many thanks to anyone who answers :)

Yes, no, and I'd want to read it before offering to book club. 'trainspotting' reference rather off-putting.

No, yes, would only recommend if no book club members suffered from depression or suicidal tendencies and we had a lot of mulled wine or whisky when we were discussing it.

tassisssss · 26/11/2011 20:51

yes, no, would quite like to read it!

smileitssunny · 28/11/2011 13:52

ah well we do drink wine at my group spendthrift Grin

Yes, in a book group.

Never heard of The House of Green Shutters. Am slightly put off by Trainspotting comparison.

Smile - so i would hopeexpect but the question is - do you need to do so to face the book? THWGS is one of the most depressing things I have ever read - beats Lear and Jude handsdown.

I am in a book group, but we haven't read that one. I have read it myself and loved it though - great characterisations.

AgentProvocateur · 28/11/2011 21:57

Yes.

Yes, and it completely divided us. I was in the "loved it" camp.

smileitssunny · 29/11/2011 21:19

well, I don't think I'll be suggesting it then...I love a happy ending!
