most disliked or irritating heroine?

On a similar basis to the most dire book you've finished, who are the heroines you have most disliked? Mine are: Emma in pole position, then Catherine Morland, Marianne and Eleanor (although I like Jane Austen - bizarre), the heroine of The Bell Jar, and Esther in Bleak House.

Fanny in Mansfield Park, Bella in Twilight.

MegBusset · 19/11/2011 00:07

Jane Eyre.

seasalt · 19/11/2011 00:33

I think Mary is the real heroine in Mansfield Park.

SirBoobAlot · 19/11/2011 00:52

Whats-her-face from Pride and Prejudice (that's how irritating she is, can't remember her bloody name. Or it could be that its 1am) - makes me want to slap her.

Cosette in Les Miserables - what a useless sap.

MotherMucca · 19/11/2011 00:55

To bring it down to literature lite:

Nicci French's female protagonists are awful.

FloydieDoydie · 19/11/2011 00:59

Scarpetta in the Patricia Cornwell books -just so smug I wanted to punch her. The first book was pretty engaging, after about 6 books the character was irritating the hell out of me and the plot was totally by numbers.

Also the annoying niece who just happened to have recently acquired a new skill/job etc that is coincidentally vital to the case Scarpetta is currently working on

darksideofthemooncup · 19/11/2011 01:01

Bridget Fecking jones

Cheboludo · 19/11/2011 01:02

Fucking Cathy

FloydieDoydie · 19/11/2011 01:02

I meant each book plot was by numbers.

I kept going with them up until Blowfly when I totally snapped and actually did throw the book across the room. They all went to my grandad to take to the pensioners club - I felt guilty inflicting them on the elderly!

Oh! And she kept bringing people back from the bloody dead to suit her story. Bloody lazy writing.

louderthanbombs · 19/11/2011 01:15

Yes, Cathy! Grr

Jacksmania · 19/11/2011 04:07

Oh I got so sick of the Scarpetta novels!!! I let a number of years go by before I read the most recent one, Port Mortuary. What. A. Piece. Of. Crap!!!!!!!!!!!

tocha · 19/11/2011 11:02

yes, it all went downhill after she brought that character back from the dead. I just about coped with the being stalked by serial killers from previous books plots but that was the end for me with Scarpetta!

Kayano · 19/11/2011 18:53

Bella Swan

Read twilight to
Try and understand the hype and she made me feel physically sick. Angry

DuchessofMalfi · 20/11/2011 16:35

Scarlett O'Hara. What a thoroughly spoilt brat. She needed a really good slap for her selfish behaviour.

fivegomadindorset · 20/11/2011 16:37

Bella whatever her name was.

newbiedoobiedoo · 20/11/2011 16:41

Bella - for setting feminism back about 1000 years!

Fanny - Mansfield Park

Cathy - Wuthering Heights (though are we supposed to hate her?)

Becky Bloomfield from the Shopoholic Series...funny in the first one, painful by the last!

midnightexpress · 20/11/2011 16:41

I'm with you on Emma, OP. Especially as interpreted by Gwynnie, but anyway. Bossyboots.

I kind of like Esther, but I suppose she is a bit wet, and what's with the dear darling Ada when she's only known her for 5 minutes?

I'm not mad about Emma Bovary.

midnightexpress · 20/11/2011 16:43

Who is Bella? Confused

FryingNemo · 20/11/2011 16:44

Bridget Jones.

The Shopaholic woman. Made me want to stick pins intoy eyes.

newbiedoobiedoo · 20/11/2011 16:44

midnightexpress from Twilight series! :)

FryingNemo · 20/11/2011 16:45

Intoy eyes should have read, into my eyes.

midnightexpress · 20/11/2011 16:45

Ah I see. Why is she annoying then and what has she done to set back feminism so dreadfully (have never read or seen - old gimmer)?

newbiedoobiedoo · 20/11/2011 16:52

Well, it's just my humble opinion but a few examples:

Though she has full use of her legs, she seems to require a lot of carrying around, literally!

She has no friends outside of her vampire boyfriend and his vampire family, aside from her werewolf friend who she is also half in love with (so not really a friend, more another male to obsess about).

She allows this vampire boyfriend (and occasionally werewolf friend) to control every single, solitary aspect of her life.

Her main goal in life is to be bitten by said vampire so that she too can be a vampire and spend eternity being controlled by him.

It's all very creepy and she's a moron!

spendthrift · 20/11/2011 17:43

I agree about Emma B as well as hating Emma Woodhouse. How could I have forgotten that I just want to slap Scarlett O'Hara. I've never been able to stomach Little Dorrit also Little Nell or whatever is the name of the girl who clutters up graveyards. DSis says old Betty whatshername in Our Mutual Friend who goes off to die ever so gallantly taking her wares around the country.

SirBoob - do you mean Elizabeth? She's too arch at the beginning, I agree, but I think she improves.

midnightexpress · 20/11/2011 18:57

And how could I have forgotten Anna Karenina? She gets on my nerves too.
