A friend has recommended this book for my 14 year old daughter. Friend is now 30 and remembers reading it as a teenager and so she has bought it online and given it to me. She suggests that i read it first to check its ok for my dd. When the book arrived we see that it has 800 pages (she had forgotten how long it was!). Before i plough into it can anyone give me an indication of its suitablility for a 14 year old? DD is a keen reader and eager to give it a go! I'm slow and it'll take me ages to read it! Thanks

IMO not suitable for 14 some quite violent sex

I remember reading it as a teen and can't remember details now - less salacious than the scruples and similiar books I read at the same time.

Thanks, I will put it to one side for the moment, and read it myself at some point!

Definitely not suitable for a 14yo, I'd say 16 and over and not until some serious discussion about DV, emotional abuse and the position of women in the Middle Ages.

I read it as a teenager and loved it but when I read it again recently I found that it has dated very badly. I would not recommend it for a teenager mainly because it seems to indicate that violence towards women is acceptable. The modern day female character is physically mistreated by her partner yet they all live happily ever after. The violence in the Middle Ages is as it would have been, it was the contemporary relationships which I found very disturbing.

I loved The lady of Hay but I wouldn't recommend it for a 14 year old, put it aside for a couple of years.

am nearly half way through and really enjoying it but yes definitely not suitable for my dd! Thanks for all of your input. (ps the most dated thing about it is when they are trying to contact peopele and they arent in their office, I keep thinking why dont they just call them on their mobiles!)

I love Barbara Erskine, she is one of my fav writers and I was going to say definitely not suitable for a 14 year old.
Glad you are enjoying it.
