all of you lot who love and intelligent thriller - who want a book that is a page turner yet thought provoking, here it is!
Written by a screenwriter ( and yes i have already cast it in my mind!) and the kind of book you set your alarm early to read.

BUY BUY
( oh the first bits a bit gory - stick with it)

KurriKurri · 21/09/2011 14:21

I've just got a copy from the library - will report back when I've read it (might take me a few days - I'm a slow reader.)

KurriKurri · 29/09/2011 20:16

Right I have finished this now. I loved it - it's a really good thriller, - brilliantly evoked picture of life on Lewis, and a very interesting detective. Can't wait for the next one in the series.

Many thanks for the recommendation ireallyagreewithyou

piebald · 29/09/2011 21:08

I need to get this. My husband is from Lewis and we go every year. Thats as good an excuse as any, I think.

Proon · 04/10/2011 14:38

I'm reading it - about 2/3 through, enjoying it as a thriller.
I would say that the evocation of small-small-town highland life is spot on. I don't know about the islands but the young men driving round in battered old cars because there's nothing else to do... the drinking, the sex, the hopelessness of some of the characters, all very accurate.

So far though I haven't read any "Aye, you'll be back, you think you're something now but just wait till you get away, you'll never hack it, you're just the same as the rest of us you know." Hmm The main character just gets a lot of "Lucky you, getting away" - wish I'd got off with so little abuse.

Have to agree, this is a brilliant book, i really enjoyed the story, and the description of such a desolate place to grow up as a young boy and teenager.

I have recommended it to friends and my book club.

agree would make a good film

whereismywine · 11/10/2011 11:35

Wasnt sure about this but am now going off to amazon for all too easy clicking. Have mostly used mumsnet for conception empathies but decided to wander over to things to distract my ttc mind. This is great!

FairyBlueBell · 11/10/2011 22:33

I loved this tale of Finn "returning" to his teenage self and experiences, Ewan McGregor is cast in my mind .... Blush

FairyBlueBell · 12/10/2011 11:33

Just noticed that the second part of this intended trilogy us due to be published I January ...

Proon · 12/10/2011 16:25

Those who've finished it, did you like the ending? I didn't at all.

Earthymama · 12/10/2011 20:05

I read this last night and enjoyed it but I think that Shetland Quartet is stronger and more enjoyable.

I have never been to these islands but would love to after reading all these books. I just hope the murder rate is as fictional as Oxford's re Morse!

Dunlurking · 13/10/2011 08:24

Thanks for the recommedation. Very gripping and good value at the kindle price. Have been to Lewis/Harris/Uig a few times so could really picture it.

I agree with you Proon . Loved it all through, the way the revelations about Finn's past were spread through the book. But spoiler alert look away now -couldn't believe the whole thing would have been constructed by one person to bring him back to the island - just didn't work for me either, that ending.

KurriKurri · 13/10/2011 20:01

Earthymama - I'll join you in recommending the Shetland Quartet - I loved them too.

verytellytubby · 17/10/2011 21:09

I really enjoyed it until the end. Will definitely read the next one.

piebald · 20/10/2011 19:57

I loved the Shetland Quartet but was a bit alarmed at the murder rate! OH was working out there at the time

ItsaMissTerri · 20/10/2011 20:43

just bought it on Amazon - far too easy to spend with that one click order button after a glass of Wine - looking forward to reading it
