Post apocalyptic fiction again

A while back I had a huge thread, with lots of people kindly recommending dystopian or post-apocalyptic fiction.

Last night I read 'Children Of The Dust' - a 1980s children's book about life after a nuclear war. Unfortunately, I was v disappointed by it because I felt that the writer was so busy labouring her anti-nuclear point that she forgot about making the book interesting and her characters multi-dimensional. I thought this was a real shame because I liked the different generations structure and the way the different key characters linked but it was very clunky with lots of pseudo-religious/Pagan stuff getting in the way of the story.

Have now started 'Riddley Walker' and thus far am finding it pretty hard work. It's not so much the language but all the 'tellings' and the 'Eusa' stuff that I'm just not terribly taken by yet. I can see that it's clever but it's not making me want to devour it in one sitting.

Any opinions? Just don't give any spoilers on Riddley Walker yet please! :)

I wasn't sure I'd like Mara and Dann, was sent a review copy for a retrospective on Lessing in a book magazine. I've ended up buying the sequel.

Thanks both. Will look out for it, although Lessing doesn't always do it for me I must admit. A bit worthy at times.

I've been recommended Mary Shelley's , The Last Man, as a post apocalyptic read.

Not in any of my local authority's libraries but my birthday is coming up so making heavy hints to my family.

Thank you. I wonder if it's available to read online? Will have a look/see. :)

Have had a quick look through both threads and can't see them mentioned so... I really enjoyed Last Light and the sequel Afterlight by Alex Scarrow. Think they were recommended on MN a few months ago, is about the world's oil running out and the resulting breakdown of civilisation. Am not usually a fan of this kind of genre, but really enjoyed them.

Think I've still got both of them, normally take my finished books to the library, but pm me if you'd like them Remus and I'd be happy to post them to you! Smile

Gift upon the Shore by MK Wren
Loved the Gate to women's country
John Christopher- the Prince in Waiting Trilogy
Glad other people like this genre too

Hi both - thanks for these. Becklet - that is really kind of you but don't worry about sending them to me, as dp should be able to order them from the library pretty easily. I feel the need to keep using the library so that they don't decide to close it down and reckon I read enough library books every year to single-handedly prove to Cameron and his cronies that libraries perform a valuable public function and should therefore be maintained!

Not heard of any of those, Treacle - will have a google.
