Has anyone read Toast by Nigel Slater? I read it not long after having ds which is maybe why it touched me so much, but it's the best book I've read in along time [smile0

Think I know the article you mean - was he going on about how friends can't take their children round to his house because they'd make too much mess or something? Don't care, I'm still in love with him..

toast was ok - wasn't very well edited though, imo
you could tell it had been cobbled together from his newspaper columns

but would recommend as holiday relaxing read

Tatties · 02/12/2005 12:46

Who, me? Weird? Naaahhh

Would you have enjoyed the book as much if he hadn't been a celeb? Did that make a difference?

teeavee · 02/12/2005 13:00

yes, it made a difference to me.
wouldn't have read it otherwise (- and he certainly wouldn't have had it published!)

spacedonkey · 02/12/2005 14:15

I love Nigel (although he can verge on ponciness sometimes) and I loved Toast. It made me cry. He's a fantastic writer!

sevensuzyswongsaswimming · 02/12/2005 14:17

kiss kiss kiss to spackedonkey

tell me the synopsis, what happened to NIge to make him in to an asexual Bunter?

spacedonkey · 02/12/2005 14:19

asexual? methinks not, he's as camp as a row of tents!

many kisses to you madame btw

sevensuzyswongsaswimming · 02/12/2005 14:21

he is isn't he, there's no studly dudleyness in those mohair jumpers and the penchant for morelles is there? xxxxx

Tatties · 02/12/2005 19:19

Have to say I didn't really know who Nigel was until I read the book! So it was the book that made me love him. I didn't feel the book was cobbled together at all. In the beginning I thought it was just like a collection of memories that could stand alone. I thought it was so clever how as the book went on you gradually began to see the story emerge and it became obvious that each section had some relevance and wasn't just a random memory. I loved his style of writing and I just felt that it was the perfect story, so bittersweet and almost too perfectly written to be true.
