I prefer non fiction and usually just browse my local book shop.

I like stuff about escapes from cults, evil husbands etc. Lost at sea/desert stories. Prison stories as well.

I don't like those stories about peoples childhood abuse Hmm

Can anybody recommend anything? Smile

For some good 'lost at sea' type books try:

Mutiny On The Bounty by the guy who wrote The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas - it's fiction but well-researched and pretty well-written;

This one is about the true story that inspired Moby Dick and is really good

This one is about a shipwreck in the 18th century

This one was a bit irritatingly long-winded but has lots of gore in it!

www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=wedlock&x=0&y=0 this is good about a georgian bride and her evil husband (template for Thackery's Barry Lyndon)

Papillon is a classic ... a memoir by convicted felon and fugative Henri Charriere (this was the book that was made into the film with Dustin Hofman and Steve McQueen)

Samurai William, the tale of the first Englishman in Japan and his influence on society there. It's a cracking read.

For something a bit lighter and nostalgic I can heartily recommend The Olivetti Chronicles, a selection of articles written by John Peel. I'm reading this at the moment, and can hear Peel's much missed voice in my head as I do so. It's wonderfully warm and funny.
