Would like something with good characters to discuss, but not too worthy as lots of us will probably read it on the beach over the summer!

Anything by Sarah-Kate Lynch. Humourous with twists and really enjoyable to read. The House of Peine, By Bread Alone and Dolce di Love all good

I'm reading this at the moment

www.amazon.co.uk/Bed-David-Whitehouse/dp/1847679811/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1308576935&sr=8-1

which is an interesting read

CDMforever · 20/06/2011 19:26

I chose The Help by Katharine Stockett.
Everyone enjoyed it and we had the longest discussion we've ever had about a book.

Meow75 · 20/06/2011 19:28

When God was a rabbit. Will come back with author in a sec.

Meow75 · 20/06/2011 19:29

Sarah Winman.

RupertTheBear · 20/06/2011 19:30

When God was a Rabbit is fab.
We also loved The Hand that First Held Mine.

PlumBumMum · 20/06/2011 19:31

I second The Help

titferbrains · 20/06/2011 19:35

I've just read the new Ann Patchett novel, State of Wonder. First bit of fiction I've really enjoyed in ages. It's out in hardback only tho AFAIK. She wrote Bel Canto which is another great read - I'm considering going back and re-reading it as I liked SOW so much.

I think Juliet, Naked by Nick Hornby is a really funny read but it doesn't really raise any big "ishoos" if you are looking for something a bit meaty to discuss.

mrswoodentop · 20/06/2011 19:40

My bookclub has just read The Hand that First held mine which was a big success with plenty to talk about. We also read The Help which went down well.Another success was The Secret River

Our holiday read is to be 22 Britannia Road. Recommended on here. My copy is on it's way from Amazon so no idea as yet how it will be, but got some very good reviews on Amazon.

castlesintheair · 20/06/2011 20:02

Agree about The Help. Great charcterisation for you to discuss. Also Brixton Beach - such lyrical, colourful narrative. Both very easy reads too without being chick litty.

DaisySteiner · 20/06/2011 22:34

Thanks, some great suggestions. We read The Help a few months ago - a very popular choice!

I've just finished The Poison tree by Erin Kelly and I thought that had some very interesting characters... good twisty turny plot as well!

TotalChaos · 21/06/2011 20:58

Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. Far more readable and page turningy than you would imagine.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 21/06/2011 21:48

Our book club is currently reading When God was a Rabbit, am finding it a tab boring hence I'm on MN and not reading.

SniffSnortJones · 21/06/2011 21:50

The Girl With Glass Feet.

FreddoBaggyMac · 22/06/2011 09:16

Oo have just checked out The Girl with Glass feet on Amazon SniffSnort and I love the sound of it... I should not look at these threads as I always end up spending money!!

BelleEnd · 22/06/2011 09:26

The Girl With Glass Feet is great- It was only a quid in the kindle store when I bought it about a month ago.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 22/06/2011 20:24

Bit of a different one but how about Greengage Summer. They talked about in on Radio 4's Good Read last night and I can't wait to read it.

aliceliddell · 22/06/2011 20:28

We just had 'Never let me go' Ishiguro, before that 'My sister's keeper' J Picoult - similar ish themes, very different novels.

grendel · 22/06/2011 22:50

I'm currently raving about Ursula Under by Ingrid Hill to anyone who will listen.
www.amazon.co.uk/Ursula-Under-Ingrid-Hill/dp/0099479869

I also second the earlier suggestion of The Hand that First Held Mine. A beautiful book with a great weepy bit.

But if you want a compelling page turner cum doorstop, and you like a bit of vampire apocalypse, you could always try The Passage by Justin Cronin. It comes in at a sliver under 1000 pages and is utterly gripping almost until the very end. Just finished it yesterday and am feeling a bit unsure what to do with all my spare time now!

OpusProSerenus · 22/06/2011 22:53

Oh I loved the Greengage Summer! I'd forgotten all about it, must read it again.

What about A Prayer for Owen Meany? Can't remember author but I read it on holiday last year and loved it.
