Never Let Me Go

Have any of you read this book? I've recently read it following a review from a film critic who said the book was superior. I am glad I read it instead of going to the cinema.

It's difficult to explain without spoiling it. On one level it's about the relationship between three people who were friends from childhood, and the nievity of youth. On another it's about ethics and what it means to be human.

This is not light escapist reading, but If you fancy something different, emotionally heavy and though provoking, please consider giving this a go.

I've read this and really enjoyed it. My only problem with it was that I wanted more of it! Grin.

kiery · 29/06/2011 09:01

I thought Never Let me Go was a good book too.

Heartbreaking, frustrating but well written and tackled some difficult issues too. I was bewildered at how accepting the main characters were of their fates: but I suppose most of us just plod along on the path set out for us in society as well.

I haven't manages to watch the film yet; does it bring a different view to it?

hester · 29/06/2011 09:04

I really liked this book. He is a fantastically skilled writer.

Smallbrownbird · 06/07/2011 11:46

A really moving book that made me think about all the things I don't agree with in life but don't do anything about because we all tend to accept the way things are.

Michiem · 06/07/2011 18:13

I am only half way through and finding it a bit hard going to get back into after a break, but then it becomes unputdownable

BelfastBloke · 06/07/2011 18:19

Good book, great film. I was happy enough to have seen the film first. It wasn't one of those where the book is clearly superior, because the film was so fascinating.

NettoSuperstar · 06/07/2011 18:20

I've seen the film, and because I knew nothing about it, I was shocked. I spent the first half thinking I must have misunderstood.
I loved it, and must get round to reading the book.

UpsyDozy · 06/07/2011 18:28

Half way through the book, can't put it down!

Paquitalaflor · 08/07/2011 13:52

I read that recently and while I thought it was very good, it left me wanting more... Does anyone know what I mean? I wanted to know more the why they were treated that way and why no one did anything about it. Like Kiery said, they were resigned to their fates.

Haven't seen the film yet. I always think I am going to hate KK but she is usually rather good in films.

TanteRosmerta · 08/07/2011 13:56

oh good, glad I will be able to enjoy the book, despite seeing the film first...

MindyMacready · 08/07/2011 13:58

One of my favourite reads!

starmucks · 08/07/2011 14:00

I hated it. Difficult and beautifully written, in fact the pathos of the narrative weighed as heavily as the subject, but I did not enjoy it and wouldn't recommend it.

america · 18/07/2011 18:24

OH, I loved this book. One of rare books where I actually re-read sentences because the language was so beautiful.

Michiem · 18/07/2011 21:53

Finally finished and just feel that it's a lovely book, slightly predictable and hard going in parts. Looking forward to seeing how the film has interpreted the characters

MaitreKarlsson · 14/09/2011 11:38

Loved it but as Kiery said...heartbreaking

I'm reading it at the moment!

Dozer · 24/01/2012 20:33

Disturbing, uncomfortable reading, but v clever and well-written. Not sure will see film, prefer light escapist films!

DuchessofMalfi · 25/01/2012 13:04

I bought myself a copy this morning. Looking forward to reading it.

IKilledIgglePiggle · 08/02/2012 12:34

I read this whilst pregnant with my now 1 yo DD, it stayed with me for a long time, I saw the film recently and as always it wasn't as good.

gabid · 20/02/2012 20:13

I read this book years ago and still remember it well. Was always going to find other stuff from this auther, I can never remember the name.

Has anyone read his/her other books?

msrisotto · 20/02/2012 20:16

Great book, film not worth it.

bigbadbarry · 20/02/2012 20:18

mrsB just what I thought - lovely book, better than expected film (I usually dislike films of books I have enjoyed) but it was too spelt out too early. The characters were very well done though.

bigbadbarry · 20/02/2012 20:20

gabid, same author as the remains of the day (which is interestingly one of he few other film adaptations I have enjoyed)

JasperJohns · 20/02/2012 20:25

I loved this book.

The subject matter is actually awful but I was hypnotised by the beautiful writing to the point where the awfulness was almost immaterial.

Love Kazuo Ishiguro though. Remains of the Day is an all time fave of mine.
