Do you remember the story about the porridge bowl which kept filling up and overflowed, then eventually flooded the village? What is the title of this story? Was it a tale in a general story book (?title) or was it a ladybird book? Please help!

In a cottage in a wood

Near a cottage in a wood
A little boy in the forest stood
Saw an old lady passing by
With a magic pot.

Bubble bubble porridge pot!
Make me porridge, make a lot
Don't forget the magic words,
"No more, that's the lot! "

Near a cottage in a wood
A little boy in the forest stood
The magic pot was bubbling hot
Spilling over the path.

Magic porridge cooking pot!
Save me, save me, save me stop!
Stop this magic porridge pot
"No more, that's the lot! "

If this is it, it is still in print.

Strange place Mumnsnet.

Where else would you get gwon women discussing tales of porridge at 8.30 in the morning.

KBear · 19/11/2005 09:42

I think we've got two copies of this Ladybird book if you want one. Let me check ....

eldestgirl · 19/11/2005 10:01

I used to love this book. They forget the spell which stops the por producing porridge, and then someone says "Stop litte pot, stop" and it does.
I can still remember the illustrations. Those lady bird books were fab, but I couldn't find them when I last looked in my parents' attic.

I loved this story too. It was indeed a Ladybird book called The Magic Porridge Pot. I also loved The Princess and the Pea!

KBear - I'd love your spare copy if hellomama doesn't want it. Is it one from the 1970s? Ds1 loves the story, and I'd like him to see one like I read in when I was little.

hellomama · 19/11/2005 17:02

BadHair, if Kbear does have a spare copy and is willing to give it away, please have it for your DS as I think PIL will buy is for DS for Christmas. x

I have a copy here at home too - inside is in pretty good condition (bit of pen on the inside cover) outside a bit worn (was on of my favourties when little) if anyone still wants a 1970's copy

KBearthePolarBear · 21/11/2005 19:26

My one is the modern version. Probably cheaper to buy than to post.

Seen them in a stand in my post office and in Wilkinsons.

You mixed it up.

In a forest in a wood,
A little man by the window stood;
Saw a rabbit jumping by,
Knocking at the door:

"Help me! Help me!"
The rabbit said,
"Before the hunter
Will shoot me dead!"
Come little rabbit, come to me,
Happy we shall be.

This makes memories my first year at a beautiful Zimbabwean infant school 38 years ago so vivid.

It's a folk tale that was first recorded by the Grimm's Brothers in the 19th century, in Germany it's called Der süße Brei or 'Sweet Porridge'.

Buttalapasta · 11/12/2025 12:02

I used to love this. I couldn't believe how nobody could remember " stop little pot stop:. Idiots.
