Are the Twilight books suitable for a 10 year old (year 5) girl?

Dd tells me all her friends at school have read these. Am mildly surprised because I thought they were aimed at the teenage market, tbh. Am not prepared to read them myself ... can anyone tell me anything about them?

They are vile anti-feminist pro-abstinence bullshit which attempt to convince tenage girls that an abusive relationship with a man who wants to kill them is 'romantic'.

Get her a Buffy box set instead.

Jeez. Am shocked that the parents have let them read them, tbh. These are girls who still have another year to do in primary school.

Well my 11 DD has read the first 3, but she's been told she's not reading the next one until she's older as they have sex in that one - I also pointed out all the ways that Edward is 'mean' to Bella and how pathetic Bella is - she agrees with me, but says she still likes the books, so I don't know how succesful that was, lol

I do know that most of her friends have read them too, all of them, not just the first ones - but that's not really a reason to let her in itself

Our local library has these books on display in the childrens section

Last week a 11yo came in (with her mum) and told the staff she would like to read them. The member of staff waxed lyrical about them whilst the mum told me that as a kid she liked the faraway tree and roald dahl.

At the time I didnt think anything much about it but having looked at valpollicella's link I am really Shock

Valpollicella · 20/05/2011 00:13

They are not children's books, by any stretch of the imagination.

I really wouldn't want any DD of mine ( aged 10) reading that before I had done. Way too many issues that would need to be talked about

The links are of course overstating what goes on, but they do state the salient points which the books are hinged on

Agree with everything said.

I'm not sure I believe in outlawing books outright, but I would at least put them off for some years. And if she is going to read them, you should read them yourself so that you can discuss them with her.

Still not age-appropriate, I guess, but Buffy IS so much betterGrin
