Goodreads.com - What's the advantage of having friends?

Just started using this site as I like to read other people's opinions of books after I read them (especially if I didn't like them at all!)

There's a bit about friends and that it make it better to have them. Why? (obviously I mean on goodread rather than in real life!)

Anyone care to enlighten me?

Most of my "goodreads" friends are people I know from other online places, I've even met some of them in real life. What I get is updates on their ratings and reviews for books they've read, in one daily email (one to me, not per friend). I'm nosy and love to know what others are reading and their opinions of that reading, so the advantage to me of having gr "friends" is satisfaction of my curiosity.

I tried it for a while, but found it difficult to build up a group of friends. If you're doing it to discuss with existing friends, who might live too far away to discuss books with on a regular basis, you might like to try setting up a private group on Facebook and invite friends onto it. I've done this, and really enjoy hearing about what they're reading. We take it in turns to suggest books for us all to read, which we talk about as we go along, as well.
