Just finished reading all of C. S. Sansom's, which I quite liked. Also like John le Carre and, the ultimate, The Secret History by Donna Tartt.

Give me your recommendations please!

I've read so many I couldn't possible nominate a single standout but based on your likes, I reckon you'ld also like:-

  1. Alan Furst - WW2 spy type stuff set in Eastern Europe
  2. Olen Steinhauer - Bridge of Sighs series - set between 50s and 80s in Easter Europe
  3. In the Woods by Tana French, contemporary Irish
  4. Alone in Berlin by Hans Fallada (more history than crime but excellent)
  5. Philip Kerr - Berlin Noir/Gunther series
  6. Jason Goodwin - Janissary Tree and others in series - set in Ottoman Istanbul
  7. A Beautiful Place to Die by Malla Nunn - set in 50s South Africa.
  8. Tony Hillerman - Leaphorn/Chee series - set on Navajo reservation.

I've just read Alone In Berlin which was pretty decent.
Yes to The Woman In White - also The Moonstone.
I've just read Lady Audley's Secret which is pretty good if you skip the long rambly bits where the author gets in the way of her own story.
Conan Doyle - obvious but good.
Ariana Franklyn's Mistress Of The Art Of Death series is pretty good.
Frank Tallis' Vienna books - but only the first couple and then they get very samey. There's only so much sacher torte and sexual tension one can take before getting weary. :)
