Sookie Stackhouse....

Need to talk about Sookie! Need answers (ok theories will do). Where is Ms Harris going with this series? Finished Dead Reckoning yesterday and feel like there should have been a few more chapters. Can't believe I have to wait for another year before the penultimate book - which will no doubt throw up more questions before all is resolved in the final one.

Firstly Harris has always maintained Sookie will not become a vampire. Sookie's always banged on about loving the sun and heavy hints all round re kids so I don't think that's an option.

However, she can't remain human and involved with vampire - Eric or Bill since she'll age and they won't. Can't see Quinn or Alcide returning in 'romantic' role. Which leaves Sam - don't really like this option!

And what's the fairies role in this - is she (can she) become a 'full fairy' - lots of hints re not many fairy women left and the race dying out?

Earlier books were good fun but this one has left me a little flat - anyone else??

I'm not sure whether to read the last book or not, and I guess you have made it even less tempting. Maybe I'll wait until all the rest of the books are out. I was really happy with everything after the last book..

SPOILERS for those who haven't read all the books:

Sookie happy with Eric, Bill getting back his whatever-she-is, Jason put in his place - even the police officers were happily living together! I'm not sure if I want to read something that tears all this apart. And I need Sookie to be with EricBlush. I can't imagine a way for Harris to split them up and still keeping me happy.

Actually, can't you just tell me what happens in the latest book? With spoiler warnings for others who want to read it? Then I can discuss it!

Greenmantle · 06/05/2011 22:19

I just felt like the book covered too much ground without actually going into much emotional depth.

Maybe she will use the cluviel dor to make Bill human again? I can't see her ending up with Eric, they are too different morally.

MyBrainIsOutOfTune · 06/05/2011 23:29

If it isn't to be Eric, then I prefer Sam. I love Sam. I just don't feel Sookie feeling the attraction.. Alcide turned out to be a jerk, so I don't like him, and Quinn never felt real. He was just some mountain of muscles who turned up to distract Sookie away from the vampires for a little while - and he didn't even succeed particularly well in that. It's as if Harris wanted him to be something to Sookie, but then lost interest herself and dropped him.

Bill is dull. And never really knew her. And tried to rape her (did? can't remember). Sookie says later on that he didn't realise it was her. That obviously makes it alrightHmm

mamalocco · 07/05/2011 13:30

Didn't mean to put anyone off reading it - think CH is laying some ground work re the fairy situation and there's some interesting background re Sookie's gran so worth reading but I really like Eric and agree, CH is going to have to do something exceptional to finish that relationship to my satisfaction!!

If you've gone off Bill in the last few books, this one is worth reading for an amusing scene (you'll know the one I mean) and he comes across in a more positive light in general. Can't help thinking he might be the one Niall was referring to when he said 'the vampire loves you'.

Is anyone watching the True Blood series? Have watched the first 5-6 of season one but the variations from the book are irratating me and not sure if worth continuing.

(if buying get from Book People - £4.99)

I watched the two first seasons before I read the books, so I was completely baffled by the books - they are so different. The tv series introduces lots of new plot lines, fills out characters who are only on the margins in the books, makes some characters totally different, and even keep alive people who die in the books. Through most of the first two books, I was sitting there reading and constantly going 'WHAT???' I think it's best to just think of the tv series as a different animal, instead of being annoyed with how it changes the 'real' story. The books are written in first person after all, it's necessary for tv to flesh out other stories than just the main Sookie one, or it would get boring - or just over - very quickly. I enjoyed the second season more than the first - or part of it, at least. It is split between Dallas and home, and the Dallas part is brilliant, while the other is tiresomeConfused I haven't seen the third season yet; I'm putting it off for some reason or other.

I think you have convinced me that I can safely read the latest book. Should probably wait until the exam period is over, I guess (yeah rightWink)

I am picking up Dead Reckoning from the PO tomorrow so that's tomorrow night sorted. I agree she must stay with Eric.

Halogen · 11/05/2011 20:48

Sam is GREAT! I can't believe you lot don't like him. I think they'd be so happy together...

ClaireDeLoon · 11/05/2011 20:57

Latest book left me flat too - Pam normally one of the best characters and no spark from her because of her problems. Eric also lost that sense of fun that made him so attractive. The fairy stuff was the most interesting parts really and Mr Catathingy being back in was intriguing.

Halogen I agree with you I think Sam is great.

mamalocco · 11/05/2011 21:03

Didn't you find the Pam situation a bit odd - don't want to spoil for those not read yet - but if such an important feature in her life - why such a casual mention and nothing about it in previous book (which only finished a few weeks before Dead Reckoning begins)? She is a great character and this could have been dealt with in much greater depth.

Agree I should try to view the tv series as a different animal to the books - if only so that I stop driving dh insane by saying every 5 minutes, 'well, that didn't happen in the book'!

OP posts:
MyBrainIsOutOfTune · 12/05/2011 00:11

I do that all the time, mamalocco. I've now reached an agreement with DH where I am to stay as silent as I can during the film/series, and then, once it's over, I get to tell him everything that was different. This agreement was reached during an increasingly trying period of watching the newish Miss Marple adaptations where they changed plot elements willy nilly and even changed the murderer in some cases. Neither of us were able to follow what actually happened onscreen as I was to busy explaining that 'this isn't what happens at all!' Blush

5ofus · 12/05/2011 13:48

I am okay with the concept of the TV series being a different beast to the books and I love them both but this took at least the first series to get to.

Now, this latest book I found was a bit flat. The first half went into an excruciating amount of detail as they cleared out the loft, then went to the antique place etc - which almost felt like padding. Perhaps it was to emphasise the real life aspects of our girl Sookie but it just felt a little forced to me. The second half felt more like a return to the style of the previous books and dragged me in again. Agree with Mamalocco on the Pam situation - all a bit hastily put together and lacking Pams usual style.

I couldn't start to put together where the story will go next. Assume the fae will be back. Can't see Sookie and Sam being right for each other though.

Starting to think I might be over thinking this a bit!

sweetkitty · 14/05/2011 13:15

Just finished Dead in the Family and Dead Reckoning (in about 8 hours!!) After the previous book I agree they were both a bit flat. Totally agree about all the padding in the first half of Dead Reckoning.

Was anyone just itching for Sookie and Eric to renew their blood bond or was that just me?

Obviously this Cluviet Dor thing is going to come into play soonish as well.

Yes I agree the fae will be back probably next book.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 14/05/2011 13:34

The spark thing is there with Bill. she'll use the cluvial Dor thing to make him human again.

Not that I dont love Eric... Oh maybe she'll make Eric human then? Nooo he loves being a avampire and having the power to much.

sweetkitty · 14/05/2011 18:33

I think Bill would love to be human again but your right not Eric.

PfftTheMagicDragon · 15/05/2011 06:19

I'm about halfway through the new one, but have to say that I have found the last few books to be rather unsatisfying. They don't really go anywhere. I wondered if this is because I started watching True Blood about halfway into the books and they have a very different feeling to them. I enjoy the way that the series fleshes things out a lot more. Though there's less Bill in the books. Which is good Grin

I'm always quite disappointed with the SS books as there is so little to them - there's not many words in a book, and I've waited so long! There's never enough Eric.
