Brilliant book btw!

You really want to know?

Have you got as far as Tom's trial? If not - Atticus performs brilliantly but after a lengthy deliberation Tom is found guilty. The chilldren are very shocked but it is obvious everybody else expected that verdict. Atticus has however humilated the girl's father who threatens him. Tom tries to escape from prison but is shot dead. Atticus and Calpurnia go to tell his wife. Scout is dressed up as a ham for the school pageant and on the way home they are chased and attacked. Jem is wounded and the ham costume saves Scout before she is properly saved by Boo Radley. The attcker is the girls father - cannot remember his name and Boo has killed him defending the children.

Atticus takes on Tom Robinson, a black man who is accused of raping a white hillbilly girl, Mayella Ewell. She has been raped and beaten but Atticus proves that it was not by Tom since he has a withered hand and he wouldn't have been able to hit the side of her face that was bruised with it - the clear implication is that her father, Bob, the chief among the Tom Robinson lynch mob, has been abusing her. Despite this, and despite the town secretly acknowledging his innocence, Tom Robinson is found guilty and sentenced to death. It is a turning point in Scout and Jem's understanding of the world.

Later that year, there is a Thanksgiving parade and all the children must go in fancy dress. Scout goes as a ham in a huge wire-frame costume that covers her and on the way to the party she is attacked by an unseen stranger who clearly wants to kill her. It is Bob Ewell wanting to get his revenge on Atticus but he is stopped by Boo Radley who kills him - the official verdict is that Bob fell on his own knife, putting Boo on trial would be "to kill a mockingbird".

Such a fabulous book - you must finish it.

Arf, got here just too late. It is a fabulous book, I read it for my American Literature section of the International Baccal.

I went to see the play-of-the-book in the theatre last month - that was fab too and very true to the original story.

Love it, you must perservere!

Enjoy
xx
