Weird but the wedding has made me want to read something sort of posh and British....

Brideshead Revisited? Maybe a bit Popish though.

thenightsky · 30/04/2011 15:30

Jilly cooper Riders.

SybilBeddows · 30/04/2011 15:31

something by Nancy Mitford, Pursuit of Love or Love In A Cold Climate maybe?

farkthatforagameofsoldiers · 30/04/2011 15:32

I enjoyed this, The Lost Art of Keeping Secrets.

farkthatforagameofsoldiers · 30/04/2011 15:33

Also I Capture The Castle by Dodie Smith. Gorgeous book.

ColonelBrandonsBiggestGroupie · 30/04/2011 15:34

Yes to I Capture The Castle.

How about just going straight for the best though ie: Jane Austen?

meditrina · 30/04/2011 15:47

Mrs Dalloway (Virginia Woolf)

Anything by PG Wodehouse or Nancy Mitford, or the edited Mitford sisters' letters

Vile Bodies or A Handful of Dust by Evelyn Waugh

The Mapp and Lucia series by EF Benson

Dorothy L Sayers murders: the Wimsey/Vane courtship and honeymoon ones would probably suit your mood (Strong Poison, Have his Carcass, Gaudy Night and Busman's Honeymoon)

Or return to childhood and try the Flambards series.

farkthatforagameofsoldiers · 30/04/2011 15:50

Oh I loved Flambards! They made it into a tv series didn't they, I was at Boarding School and there was always a massive crowd round the tv on Sunday afternoons to swoon over that cad Mark. Christine did get about a bit though it has to be said Grin.

OneBadAsp · 30/04/2011 15:59

can't go wrong with a bit of pride and prejudice, surely? [cgrin]

SecretSpi · 03/05/2011 13:29

Julian Fellowes - Snobs. I wasn't keen myself but lots of others seem to have enjoyed it!

snice · 03/05/2011 13:31

another vote for Nancy Mitford

Guildenstern · 03/05/2011 13:35

I second Snobs by Julian Fellowes. Very appropriate. It's an easy read and easy to get in to.

mateysmum · 03/05/2011 13:38

Can't beat Pride and Prejudice for posh, British and romantic and middle class girls marrying above their station.

Ticks all the boxes

BalloonSlayer · 03/05/2011 13:39

I have been reading Pride and Prejudice since this time last week.

On Friday, I said to DH: "Oh I'm bored now of watching and hearing about some middle class woman marrying a rich bloke above her station and having to deal with his awful family and snobby friends - I'm off to read me book."

DameShirleyKnot · 03/05/2011 13:48

yy to Nancy Mitford also loved Capture the Castle.

I've just finished this and loved it. Lots of "posh" chitter chatter and really good fun.

anonymosity · 03/05/2011 17:38

i agree with Mrs Dalloway by Woolf. Also EM Forster - classic British, stiff, but wonderful.

and what about Remains of the Day by Ishiguro?

deaconblue · 05/05/2011 14:06

You need Howard's End - or any Foster

deaconblue · 05/05/2011 14:06

Forster sorry

CornishKK · 05/05/2011 14:10

The Camomile Lawn? Although I also second the votes for Nancy Mitford, Dorothy L Sayers and Dodie Smith.

Or pretty much any of the books published by the Persephone book shop.

verysomething · 05/05/2011 19:27

Another vote for Snobs by Julian Fellowes, and also his second book, Past Imperfect. Soooo brilliant and readable!

PigeonPie · 05/05/2011 19:30

If you want something non-fiction but regal how about William Shawcross' biography of the Queen Mum.

Not a light read but amazing social history as it covers the 20th Century.

Lilymaid · 05/05/2011 19:43

Cazalet Chronicles by Elizabeth Jane Howard. Story of a wealthy English family from 1937-45. Four books with the stories of the adults and the children as they grow up. Mind you they are only Upper Middle Class, so perhaps not posh enough. Well written too!

ManicMother7777 · 05/05/2011 21:36

Agree re Julian Fellowes - Snobs especially good.

CornishKK · 06/05/2011 15:37

The Cazalet Chronicles are fantastic, I read them after a Mumsnet recommendation!

Another suggestion is The Go Between by LP Hartley.
