Euro-crime

Not sure why but I've recently got into crime fiction set in Northern Europe. I loved 'The girl with the dragon tattoo' trilogy, the Wallender series etc. I think it is something to do with how terse, functional and un-frilly the Dutch/Finnish/Swedish languages seem when translated into English.

Anyone else enjoy similar stuff and could you recommend any other authors? I quite like series.

Try Jo Nesbo - his Harry Hole series, set in Norway. Very good.

I read The Snowman - but I thought it was absolutely rubbish, so I'm probably no help to you!

Christian Jungerson's The Exception is great! It's not crime exactly, more a sort of thriller. Give it a try though.

Karin Fossum (series) quite like Ruth Rendell in terms of psychological interest as much as whodunnit

Arnaldur Indridason - Icelandic series featuring inspector Erlendur

Roslund/Hellstrom - The Beast, Three Seconds

Sjowahl/Wahloo - Martin Beck series (old but v. v influential on Henning Mankell and others) - Swedish series

Hakan Nesser, Inspector Van Vetereen series. (set in unnamed Northern European country)

Thanks people. I have ordered The Exception from library. Lots of other new things to try too. Have read several of the Indridason books and loved them.

I also like Fossum and the Martin Beck series. And Indridason.

Recently I read Johan Theorin's first book, Echoes from the Dead - not bad.

One of my reading friends actually set up a review site called eurocrime a few years ago - have a look for it online, lots more reading ideas there.

I watched Wallander on BBC4 and have just read Faceless Killers. Really enjoyed and will be having a look at some of the others mentioned on here soon.

Just finished 'The Exception' and really enjoyed it. I preferred the second half which was more action, while I found the first half quite psychological/philosophical. Very gripping and thought provoking.

I'm really pleased you liked it! I had read it and recommended it to DH, who was a bit Hmm at first, but was hooked by the end.
