Are they any good? I've never read them (I had some reason or other, but have forgotten what it wasWink)

I love Buffy/Angel and Sookie Stackhouse, but am sincerely pondering setting fire to my Twilight books to save anyone else the suffering of accidentally reading them. I also have to admit to finding Dracula rather dull and annoyingBlush

I was reading a blog where people were heartily thrashing Twilight, and many of them recommended Rice as a sort of an antidote. If you have read them, could you please tell me what you liked/disliked about them?

I loved them 20ish years ago, although i found they got more tedious as I ploughed through them one after another. I found that the characters became less interesting as they books ploughed on and we got into Mummy mode.

But Interview with a Vampire is a very good read.

Interview With The Vampire is brilliant. The next two are quite good, too. 4,5,6 is OK. Forget the rest.

Goblinchild · 20/04/2011 22:11

They can be rather ponderous and convoluted. I enjoyed IWAV and Servant of the Bones. The rest I gave away.

Browncoats · 20/04/2011 22:40

Only read up to book 5 (I think) which is something about a Bodythief (Tales of ...maybe).

They're really good and if you hated Twilight (yay!) then you'll probably like them. Interview with the Vampire is a good book but IMO The Vampire Lestat is better. But I LOVE his character! He's fantastic. Have you seen the IWTV movie (probably), Tom Cruise captured Lestat perfectly (probably because they're both so vain).

Another recommendation is The Keep by someone Wilson (sorry I'm being lazy tonight and I can't be bothered looking things up).

MyBrainIsOutOfTune · 21/04/2011 00:09

Thanks, everyone. I haven't seen the movie, no . So do the books stand alone, then? If I start a series, I often want to finish it just to find out what happens to everyone (hello, Twilight (regretted that one.)) I won't miss much if I just read the first ones and skip the rest?

Interview With the Vampire is excellent; The Vampire Lestat works too (but dreadfully Yoda-ish prose style).

After that, it's Virginia Andrews with fangs all the way...Grin

MyBrainIsOutOfTune · 21/04/2011 00:16

Oh The Keep sounds creepy. Should've said that - can't handle creepyConfused Although, reading the reviews, I now want to read the book. AaarghWink

Tbh i liked them when i read them but never finished the last of them (still sitting in my to read moutain). I have some which were more favourite then others. I didnt read them in any order as a lot of them do stand alone. One that sticks out was pandora (but no idea why) Agree with servant of the bones. very good. I also liked her witch triology. Starts with Witching hour (i think) and includes taltos (first one i read) and Lasher. Although the witch series isnt vampire so might not be what you are looking for.

IreadthereforeIam · 21/04/2011 09:02

I enjoyed them, but I agree with some of the opinions on here - they did get a bit samey after a while. The first few were the best. And the Witch trilogy were very good. She has gone rather off the boil lately, though. I haven't heard good things about her latest book (I think it's about angels) though.

MyBrainIsOutOfTune · 21/04/2011 11:11

Might try the Witch ones as well, then. Thank youSmile

I started reading Interview With A Vampire but got really bored. Blush

ColdHeartedBitch · 21/04/2011 22:27

tbh I never read the first 3 in the chronicals. I watched interview with a vampire. Just never got around to reading them.

Colyngbourne · 21/04/2011 23:53

The first three are the very best; Tale of the BT, Memnoch the Paperweight and The Vampire Armand are okay-ish. The rest - Blood & Gold, Merrick, Blackwotsit Farm, Blood Canticle are just utter bilge, and Pandora is rather tedious. And the Mayfair Witches series are awful - and Rice decided to meld the two series. Cry to Heaven isn't a bad tale about the castrati, and Feast of All Saints, a half-decent voodoo-type story, and The Mummy, a rubbishy vampire-wannabe copycat tale. The Rampling/Roquelaure stories are grim.

Once she had written those first three Chronicles, that was plenty.
