saw this in the states last year, watching this thread to see what people say.

redandgreen · 19/04/2011 11:22

I thought it was terrible, but the title and the Jodi Picoult recommendation meant I was biased from the moment I saw it. My book group were slightly more forgiving but no-one was wildly enthusiatic.

Nonsensical and depressing is the most accurate strapline it could have.

gailforce1 · 19/04/2011 16:04

Oh dear, I have just finished the MN book Club book and was going to start this today. Do I need to read a depressing book in such glorious weather?

The other book I have is the Vanishing Act of Esme Lennox by Maggie O'Farrell so do I opt for that instead? Decisions, decisions....no time to go to the library to get anything else before it closes!

Crapbankerswife · 19/04/2011 17:31

the vanishing sounds like a better option

Colyngbourne · 20/04/2011 08:33

Uh-oh - this was just chosen as our Book Group read for this next month. It wouldn't have been my choice out of the ones we were offered but we go for a concensus decision.

Bonsoir · 20/04/2011 08:36

The title alone suggests it is of the Bored Suburban Mother genre. Have never heard of it though.

snigger · 20/04/2011 08:41

I liked Vanishing Act, not as much as After You'd Gone. Haven't heard of Lemon Cake, but it's not inspiring me with its title, must admit.

gailforce1 · 20/04/2011 15:27

Have started Vanishing Act and found The Hand that First held mine at the library which is also the MN Bookclub book so will move onto that.
Anyone else reading THTFHM for MN book club?

redandgreen · 21/04/2011 07:45

Btw, if anyone would like my copy of the lemon cake book after my excellent sales pitch, let me know. Otherwise it will be charity shopped pronto.

THTFHM is excellent. Tissues needed though.

I quite enjoyed Peculiar Sadness though lots of people didn't - it's about a girl/young woman growing up - eating becomes a real issue for her because being able to taste the emotions of those who've prepared food isn't pleasant.

Colyngbourne, if you haven't bought it, do take redangreen up on her offer, at least you won't have had to spend lots of money if you don't enjoy it.

I've only read one Maggie O'Farrell and I own them all - do you know that the most recent one is the MN Bookclub choice for next month?
