Mine is Nicola Marlow from Antonia Forest's Marlow books - but trying to think of more.

Anne Elliot from Persuasion. Although she does lack a sense of humour.

Butterbur · 18/03/2011 11:34

Jalav, from Sharon Green's completely ridiculous series of books in the '80s. I really can't defend my reading material here, but this beautiful, bare-breasted, undefeatable warrior woman, and her adventures in a mediaeval style fantasy world entrance me.

I read mine until they fell to bits. I see they're available on e readers...

Butterbur · 18/03/2011 13:28

...And have killed the thread!

MyBrainIsOutOfTune · 18/03/2011 17:59

Tiffany Aching, Susan, and Granny Weatherwax from Terry Pratchett

Jane Eyre

Margaret Hale (North and South)

Dorothea (Middlemarch)

Modesty Blaise

YY to Hermione and Anne Elliott as well.

suwoo · 18/03/2011 18:04

darleneconnor · 18/03/2011 21:08

lizzie bennet of course

Tisallafaff · 18/03/2011 21:11

Mattie Gokey (A Gathering Light)

I can't really remember why, just remember thinking she was a wonderful character.

TaudrieTattoo · 18/03/2011 21:16

Jo March. First, last and always.

Bobbie Wickham.

Biddy from Great Expectations, also Miss Havisham. I admire anyone who can bear a grudge that long Grin

I had a sneaking admiration for Mrs Joe as well Blush - it's just nice to come across a female character with 'tude...

Colyngbourne · 19/03/2011 00:21

Dorothea from Middlemarch

Fanny Price from Mansfield Park - yes, seriously.

Sara Crewe in the book A Little Princess (but not the film version)

Hester Shaw in Mortal Engines

And Polly Whittacker in Fire & Hemlock, who for good reason deserves the name Hero which she takes in her early adventures with Tom Lynn

PricklyThistle · 19/03/2011 00:32

Anne of Green Gables. And Jo March.
And have a bit of a liking for Lizbet Salander from the Millenium trilogy.

LyraSilvertongue · 19/03/2011 00:33

Lyra Belacqua/Lyra Silvertongue.

LyraSilvertongue · 19/03/2011 00:43

And Lisbeth Salander.

cityangel · 19/03/2011 00:51

Spot the dog's Mum Sally

OnEdge · 19/03/2011 00:58

Bridgette Jones

bigbeagleeyes · 19/03/2011 11:34

Lizbeth Salander.
She's nerdy and kick-ass at the same time.

BelligerentGhoul · 19/03/2011 14:34

I came on to say Trainspotting but have been beaten to it!

I love Jo March but get so cross on every re-read, when she refuses the lovely Laurie's proposal. I can't STAND Amy. I do like Mr Bahr too though.

Hester Shaw is a flawed heroine but I do like her. Anne Elliot would have benefitted from a shag much earlier and then might have been a bit more fun-loving! Do adore her though and I love Marianne Dashwood and Emma and Elizabeth B for their flaws too.

I love, love, love Petrova in Ballet Shoes - in fact I think she is my favourite overall. I was convinced that if I had daughters they would look like Petrova and was v surprised when they didn't!
