Never let me go...

Havent read it myself and just don't have time at the moment. DSD wants to read. She watches 18 certificate films often with her mother along with Skins which I find utterly unsuitable... so she is pretty used to being exposed to things that are quite grown up.

I felt that because I am trying to encourage her reading, it should be ok. I mean, it's hardly a trashy book is it? I'm just pleased she's reading to be honest, but I thought I should just check MNJury!

It's not inappropriate at all as far as I remember (I read it last summer) - it handles some complex ideas though, and there are sex bits I think. How old is she?

Drizzela · 03/03/2011 19:42

She's 12. I've been a bit naughty and put it on Chat too!

The problem is, if I don't let her read it, or make her wait until I've read it first, her mother will take her to the cinema to watch the film and I will have missed the window of opportunity while there is a book she is actually interested in reading!

I think I'll let her read it and tell her she can talk about some of the themes if she needs to

I read it last year as well, its not explicit iirc so should be ok, but yes perhaps give her space to discuss it if she needs to

She's 12 and she wants to read it?

I liked the book. Well-written, I'm a fan of Ishiguro's style. Thought provoking.

She does, I think because it's a film. It's got her hooked. But I'm all for it if it gets her reading!

If she wants to read it and she's keen, then let her read it. There's nothing terribly unsuitable in it - there is mention of the main character looking through porn magazines (though I can't remember if they're called that, or girly mags or something else) but she's not looking for sexual reasons; and there is some mention of the central characters having sex but it's not explicit at all. These scenes take place when the characters are aged 18+.

It is a tremendous book but the themes are quite subtle in some ways and deep so I hope she enjoys it, and also enjoys the rather excellent film which is not perfect but is a fair adaptation and beautifully done. She will be able to match her reading experience to the style of film she will meet when she sees it.
