OK, so I've copied the thread title, but I really want to read something but I just don't know what - nothing too heavy going, but cannot abide any form of chick lit drivel bollocks.

What have you been recommended that really surprised and impressed you?

Something interesting, intriguing, that I can get my (reading) teeth into...

Someone did lend me Scarlatt Thomas's 'The End of Mr Y' which I really enjoyed, but her other stuff hasn't been as good.

I would second it - Moloka'i by Alan Brennert

and

A year of Wonders (read through a MN bookswap) - sort of reminded me of Moloka'i in some ways.
