Our book group are reading this at the moment...and I think it is dreadful! I really hate it....dislike Flora and her patronising righteousness and the 'stereotypical yokel' portrayal of the cousins. Yet, so many people have recommended it on MN and it has pretty good reviews on Amazon.

Would love to know what other people think!

I actually saw Rufus last summer in Narberth near Tenby in Wales - nearly got run over following him across the road!

Yummy as Seth!

Read it years ago and loved it... thought it was very funny. As others have said it was a parody on fashionable & somewhat overblown novels about rural life... a while later did I read a couple of books by Mary Webb. I enjoyed Precious Bane but Gone to Earth drove me up the wall - I kept wishing Flora Poste would appear and sort the daffy heroine out...

Sharbie, come back quickly before poor old Adam gets too worried Grin.

sharbie · 25/02/2011 21:35

Grin aaaah yes adam

Maud2011 · 25/02/2011 21:39

...and the liddle mop!

FellatioNelson · 25/02/2011 21:40

Oh yes! I loved his liddle washing up mop. He was so happy.

Maud2011 · 25/02/2011 21:42

Flora wasn't Grin

greenlotus · 25/02/2011 21:43

Precious Bane and Cold Comfort Farm are two of my favourite books, for very different reasons, I think I must have a weakness for rural fiction. I've read Gone to Earth but can't remember anything about it Confused.

Cold Comfort Farm is a jewel of a book IMO, but humour's a personal thing isn't it?

"There baint be no cooling jellies in Hell !!"
Just genius.
Had to go out on a limb and get the poncey Folio society edition, illustrated by Quentin Blake and I treasure it
I got "Nightingale Wood" out of the library recently, but must admit I didn't love it, IYKWIM ?
I was also completely shocked at the huge amount of books she had written that I have never heard of.

glitterkitty · 25/02/2011 22:26

Just watched the film. Thankls so much for that recommendation!

IMHO Rufus was diverting. Flora was miscast. Judith was perfect Grin

Maud2011 · 25/02/2011 22:28

GreenLotus, I think it's Prue who makes Precious Bane a good read - she's such a strong and sympathetic heroine. I can't remember what the heroine of Gone to Earth was called and neither can I remember much else about it, besides her rather annoying and IMHO overdone fey-ness.

cazzybabs · 25/02/2011 22:30

I love it too .. have read another of hers but it wasn't a patch on cold comfort

MuglyFunter · 27/02/2011 14:05

Seth and Ruben too. Send gumboots

Hysterical - going to have to read it again now. Chuckling at the thought.

and the cows! Feckless, Useless and Big Business the bull!

MuglyFunter · 27/02/2011 14:05

is gone to earth the one about the fox?

Maud2011 · 01/03/2011 23:37

MuglyFunter, yes the heroine had a fox. It's got 2 great reviews on Amazon.
