Not sure whether I am being a bit optimistic thinking I can read on flight to Aus with 3 year old!!
Looking for some "feel good" books.
Just read Maggie OFarrell, the hand that first held mine, loved it, but way too sad.
So maybe that kind of beautiful eloquent writing but happy!

ooh and don't have time to order anything, so has to be available from airport or WHsmith!
Happy with romance,thriller/mystery.

What about One Day?

redrollers · 25/02/2011 15:53

That's the only book I have read recently!
I though it was sad!!

The help? Really enjoyed it, so did my mum and dd1. Can't remember who it's by but it's on amazon.

follyfoot · 25/02/2011 16:08

Room?

redrollers · 25/02/2011 16:17

I don't think room sounds that cheery!
I get a bit emotional with anything to do with small children so might avoid that.
The help looks ok, is it uplifting?!

Yes, but not cheesy. Can't tell you why without spoiling it, though. It's going to be a film, too next year, I think.

follyfoot · 25/02/2011 16:32

Room made time stand still for me, couldnt do much else until I knew what had happened. Not cheery but uplifting.

TerrorFirmer · 25/02/2011 16:35

The Five People You Meet in Heaven is pretty cockle-warming. Short enough for a flight, too.

GoAwaySnow · 25/02/2011 16:36

Second The Help. Room is next on my list!

redrollers · 25/02/2011 16:43

i like the look of that Heaven one.
will check them all out tomorrow
could get more than one.... very optimistic.. but hopefully some time on the beach too

marion keyes - the brightest star in the sky is a good book

HibernoCaledonian · 25/02/2011 16:50

Rainy Days and Tuesdays is my go to feel-good book. I've read it so many times and still love it.

Teladi · 25/02/2011 16:55

I really like (haven't done a link before so I hope this works) Welcome to the World Baby Girl which would meet your requirements, I think.

irishqueen · 25/02/2011 17:15

the marian keyes one is smashin

dalek · 25/02/2011 18:56

Cloudstreet by Tim Winton - uplifting and it's set in Australia!

crumpet · 25/02/2011 18:58

A Suitable Boy is huge!

aprildays · 25/02/2011 21:37

The Secret Life of Bees is lovely
No 1 Ladies Detective Agency
Marian Keyes
Ceila Aherne
Miss Pettigrew lives for a A Day
I Captured the Castle
George Eliot
Elizabeth Gaskell
Jilly Cooper
A Town Called Alice - Australian theme

bonkers20 · 26/02/2011 17:27

Margaret Forster - Diary of an Ordinary Woman
Douglas Kennedy - Pursuit of Happiness

Both fairy easy reading, but great stories that you really get involved in.

Rohinton Mistry - A Fine Balance
A bit more heavy going but very interesting.

Anne Tyler - Can't remember the titles. Nice books though.

Oh, just re-read your OP. A Fine Balance isn't really feel good.

I love a good auto/biography. I recently read both Sheila Hancock's and Julie Andrews'.

Good luck for your flight. When we flew long haul with our then 3 year old we got him a personal stereo (a tape one) and he loved it. He will probably be too small to be able to watch the tv screen.

TerrorFirmer · 26/02/2011 17:51

dalek - Tim Winton is one of my favourite authors. I read Dirt Music on a flight to Sydney once. It's set set on the West coast but so evocative and beautiful. Cloudstreet is wonderful too.

Would 2nd Miss Pettigrew - its delightful
