Jodi Picoult, which should I try next?

I've read a few of hers and can't decide whether I like her or not.

Songs of the Humpback Whale was the crappest book I have ever read, I couldn't even finish it!

But 19 Minutes was one of the best books I have ever read! Definate page turner.

My Sister's Keeper was good, I enjoyed that.

Picture Perfect - Ok but not briliant.

House Rules - Another page turner - Loved it!

Second Glance

imho.

dalek · 16/02/2011 16:45

Salem Falls

newpup · 16/02/2011 17:07

I feel the same way, some of her books are great reads others have a 'quick lets churn out a novel' feel to them.

Best by a long way is Salem Falls, also enjoyed Keeping the Faith.

mandylifeboats · 16/02/2011 17:17

Handle with care was good

Ragwort · 16/02/2011 17:19

If you like Jodie Picoult it is also worth reading anything by Anita Shreve - she is a better writer I think, but similar style.

Agree that 'Songs of the Humpback Whale' was unreadable, also didn't like the one with cartoon strips on occasional pages.

'The Pact' is good - one of her earliest.

mandylifeboats · 16/02/2011 17:23

ooh yes, Anita Shreve Light on Snow, loved it

newpup · 17/02/2011 12:59

Anita Shreve Fortune's Rocks - One of my favourite reads!

freckleye · 18/02/2011 16:20

Definitely The Pact...then take a Picoult break cos they all get very samey after that imo! With MSK and 19 mins you have read the best ones ...

Ragwort · 18/02/2011 17:28

Newpup - yes I agree about Fortune's Rocks, I couldn't put it down - read it one holiday in France, put DS in a travel cot and read all day Grin.

alemci · 18/02/2011 17:39

yes i didn't like the cartoon one. It was about a girl who accused a guy of rape i think and it was depressing.

her books are ok. fortune rocks was that about the film star who came from nothing. wouldn't chose her books but get them bought for me as presents.

LoopyLoopsHulaHoops · 18/02/2011 17:42

If you've read or seen Stephen King's The Green Mile, don't read Change of Heart, as you will get annoyed at its blatant plagiarism.

Agree, Anita Shreeve is similar but better.

freelancescientist · 18/02/2011 20:06

I really enjoyed Plain Truth as well. Her earlier ones are much more 'romantic' - the more recent stuff is a bit meatier.

charley24 · 21/02/2011 12:23

Diane Chamberlin writes in same style with huge twists, try BREAKING THE SILENCE, best book I have ever read.....sooo fantastic !

Also Sister by Rosemary Lupton !

mummyhanson · 22/02/2011 19:14

Nineteen Minutes - How 19 minutes can change the world a teenage boy walks into ahis high school one day and goes on a shooting rampage. Why? the ending is shocking and fantastic, excellent read.

Handle With Care - a very sad book about a little girl with brittle bone syndrome and her parents struggle to pay doctors bills when someone sugests they could sue for wrongful birth, their morals are out to the test, very powerful yet sad, if u didnt cry at the end of my sisters keeper u will at this one,
House Rules - not able to put down, about a 17 year old boy with Aspergers syndrome, writen in first person persona in each chapter. i found it fasanating to be inside each characters head. Fantastic

Nevereatyellowsnow · 23/02/2011 14:41

I've just finished reading perfect match which I couldn't put down! The only other one of hers I've read is keeping faith which I loved but didn't get the ending at all!

HLSalter · 03/03/2011 21:29

I bawled my eyes out at Handle with Care (could be due to pregnancy hormones but it honestly is very sad) although I was slightly disappointed with the ending.

Haribojoe · 04/03/2011 19:45

My favourtie was the one set in the Amish community, I'm pretty sure it was called "Plain Truth" brilliant.

Perfect Match was also really gripping.

gallifrey · 05/03/2011 20:46

Second Glance is my favourite book of hers and different from her usual style.

I agree with Diane Chamberlain, have read about 10 of hers now and loved them all, couldn't put them down!

gallifrey · 05/03/2011 20:47

Also agree that Songs of the Humpback Whale is the worst book ever!

WincyEtNightietilMayBeOut · 05/03/2011 20:49

Cartoon one is The Tenth Circle. I'm reading ATM from the library. Not really sure why, 'tis indeed poor Grin

BelieveInLife · 05/03/2011 20:56

I love Jodi Picoult but don't get on with Anita Shreve as well. I think Picoult's earlier ones are the best though. I just read House Rules and 'solved' it by a quarter of the way through which was a shame.

Nineteen Minutes, The Pact and Plain Truth are my favourites.

GoAwaySnow · 05/03/2011 21:03

Plain Truth and Handle with Care definitely. Was in floods at the end of HWC. Also agree about Songs of the...

AnnVeronica · 06/03/2011 14:54

yy Plain Truth. That was the first JP novel I read.

Vanishing Acts is another one I liked. Much of the story is set outside of New England, and with Native American characters. She can be a bit formulaic with location and stock characters, so it was refreshing change.

Agree about Humpback Whale. It was her first book, and it shows.

TerrysNo2 · 07/03/2011 13:26

Another vote for Plain Truth here - was my first JP book and I really liked it
