CitizenOscar · 07/02/2011 17:12

Thanks for the reminder - just ordered it for my kindle with my birthday book token :)

CitizenOscar · 09/02/2011 11:44

I just finished it! Loved it too, but possibly not the most appropriate subject matter for a nervous first time mum!

elizabethtailored · 09/02/2011 12:08

I thought it was desperately sad. The realization of what had happened to Lexie and her baby - it upset me hugely. (Am trying not to give the plot away).

Decorhate · 09/02/2011 12:11

I thought the parts set in the past worked better than the ones set in present day. Dunno why but for some reason really liked the Lexie character but thought the modern day couple were a bit two dimensional...

Good story though!

bluejeans · 14/02/2011 22:09

I've just finished this and loved it

I only bought it because it was £2.99 with the Times last week and I needed something to read. I'd previously read 'After You'd gone' and one of her other novels, neither of which lived up to their reviews, in my opinion. Will have to seek out her other books in between

hewlettsdaughter · 15/02/2011 15:26

I enjoyed it too.

LadyDisdain · 15/02/2011 15:40

I love her books. The new one is the best IMO.

lagrandissima · 15/02/2011 15:56

What's it called?

lagrandissima · 15/02/2011 15:59

Oh, I guess we're talking about The Hand that First Held Mine? (Reference to Lexie, above).

Loved it. Made me cry in places - some hard emotional stuff to go through, as a mother.

LadyDisdain · 15/02/2011 15:59

The hand that first held mine

soniaweir · 15/02/2011 19:49

I did not enjoy it as much as her previous books. Was very excited to read it and did read it just before giving birth a second time (ended up having a 2nd c section!) but could not connect with any of the characters at all. Disappointed, hopefully her next book will be back on form

spingspong · 15/02/2011 20:12

Loved it, was up late night finishing it. I really enjoy her writing. The Vanishing Act of Esme Lennox is probably my least favourite, just didn't grab me as much as her others.

LadyDisdain · 15/02/2011 20:32

I agree that Esme Lennox was less grabbing.

My only gripe about the new one is that I wasn't immediately drawn in. I initially found the heroine annoyingly feisty, but she became more interesting as the story progressed.

flipper99 · 15/02/2011 20:47

I've just got the last chapter to go which I'm saving for the 3am feed tonight! I think it's great, with a 7 week old baby some of the descriptions of how Elina feels with her baby are just spot on. I'm going to make DH read it just for that.

daimbardiva · 22/02/2011 14:40

Haven't read it yet. Am looking fowrad to it though. I don't think I'll ever get over "After You'd Gone" - cried buckets, in fact am welling up just thinking about it!

Deaddei · 23/02/2011 12:27

I've just got it from the library so am looking forward to reading it.

FluffyMummy123 · 23/02/2011 12:27

OH GOD Im bored with the depressive mad post natal woman

redrollers · 25/02/2011 11:06

Just finished this on the tube this morning.
And was bawling my eyes out!
As a mother of a 3 year old, you might understand.

YouGoGlennCoco · 26/02/2011 17:58

oh it was so average

Summerbird73 · 27/02/2011 11:30

redrollers i do understand, my DS is almost 2 and i cant stop giving him cuddles and telling him how much i love him. the book really affected me, i was in bits reading the climax.

i agree that the characters in the past were much more interesting. the book started slow (i almost gave up on it but glad i persisted).

can highly recommend it, but not for the faint hearted.
